Most of my fave players from the 80's were Charvel guys (Demartini, Jake E Lee, Criss Oliva), although because Yngwie was my #1, I've always had Fender Strats, usually HSS ones. Recently I got a American Special Stratocaster HSS which is a great guitar, all black, jumbo frets, nice weight and looks etc... but I'm kind of missing the aesthetics of the Charvel over the strat though - no vintage bridge chewing up my hand, side input jack, two humbuckers or hum/single, compound radius, strat headstock, no tone knobs, jumbo frets...

But I've had trouble finding a keeper Charvel. A few years ago I had a Charvel Japanese Pro Mod, nice guitar, great neck, good workhorse, but it was a bit light, plain looking, I'm not big on maple boards, and I didn't get much mojo vibe out of it and eventually sold it off. I've tried the new Mexican Charvels and same thing. I currently have a Mexican black hardtail HS HT model with rosewood board, but it's very light, and I don't think the wood is very good because it's very muddled sounding which is a shame. Makes a great backup guitar - hardtail with locking tuners stays in tune very well, cheap enough I wouldn't care if it was dinged or stolen, but otherwise that's it. I didn't pay much for it, in fact it was factory refurbished or factory 2nd, I don't know why, except the neck seems very thin, even for a Charvel.

So anyway, I still have the Charvel bug, but looking to bump it up. I've never tried a Charvel Custom, and I just want to know if they are really worth the $$ compared to the production models? See them all the time in the classifieds here and drool over the looks. I'm really interested in the ones that The Music Zoo has been selling, like the matte black HS version with rosewood board. I just don't know how huge a jump it would be from what I have now.

If you can deal with maple the regular USA charvels from 5 years ago are better wood IMO than the jap ones. I've not tried a custom shop

the custom shop charvels rule!! they play and sound magnificently!!

Hope you're ready to wait a long, LONG time... But if you have the patience, so worth it!

What mooncobra said
do yourself a favor though buy one from the music zoo
and if you want to know why ask SAH5150 :D

Thanks guys, I guess I'll keep my eyes open for any Music Zoo customs (or RT classifieds for used ones), I'm not interested in ordering one directly from Charvel with that wait time.
I've never had a chance to try the earlier USA Pro Mods (before they went to Japan). I've heard the fretwork on the MIJ is a bit better, but from some of the comments here, the body wood might be better quality on the USA.

try to play a few of them, the wood they use on the necks varies widely these days and is key to tone. Try to buy one that has FLATSAWN maple not quarter sawn.....all vintage fender strats were flat sawn....
flat sawn rings as it is loose, while quartersawn is tight and doesn't ring nearly as well...and sounds tinny compared to full.

I have had them all and I like the USA Pro Mods for the money. They are better than the MIM and MIJ models to me. The custom shop models are cool but for me they are not +1500.00 cooler than the USA Pro Mods. And those guitars can be modded and are still cheaper.

^^^This.

I have a few of the Jap ones. I think they rock, YMMV. For the $ they cant be beat IMO.

+1

I've had 10 of the pro mods, and truthfully, the Japanese ones are superior to the american made ones in just about every way.Ive only kept two of the 10 and both are Jap models. I've played CS charvel's and yes, they're better than the pro mods (well, some of them are), but there isn't THAT big of a difference. I'd love to check out the new Guthrie model as it looks a bit different.

If you don't want to wait, I'd check out a GJ2 Glendora or Shredder model. FYI, GJ2 is Grover Jackson's new company. Wayne also makes killer guitars, but they're expensive for no real reason. If you want a guitar that weights more than a typical charvel, check out any of the ESP George Lynch models. They're all based on his old Charvels and weigh anywhere from 11-14 pounds.

Yes I've owned and played several Japanese San Dimas models. They are great guitars for sure, but I think just lack that USA mojo for me (my number one guitar is a Japanese HSS Fender Strat from 1986, so trust me its not about quality worry and cork sniffery, it's the feel and mojo).
So I think right now I'm going to try hunt down a US pro mod San Dimas since I have never tried one. Someone local to me had a US Wild Card 3 which was the matte black with one humbucker, but I passed on it at the time because I wanted a rosewood board. I should have went for it.

overpriced fenders?
Not at all, the CS charvels are made by original employee's of the old charvel shop
most of those guys back then were just kids like 19 years old and even back then built a killer guitar
fast forward to over 30 years later and they now build unbelievable guitars!

my fave wildcard is #7 (Jap), primer gray with ebony board and a JB. I have 3 of them.

Loved the neck on those!

I have a MZ custom shop. Ive sold off most of my guitars since getting it. Its the perfect machine for my needs. If mine was busted or stolen I'd be flexing a credit card the next day.
