That awkward moment... (Delay related content)

...when you can't handle the truth.

I've been using the TC Flashback since day 1. It's the delay that made me love delays. First the 2290 and mod modes, then I fell in love with the Tape. Got lucky enough to get in touch with Tore from TC on another forum, talked about a Tri Chorus Toneprint and it happened. My delay was my chorus too, perfect. And the dotted 8th...

But I wanted more and went for a Timefactor. Great pedal, dual delays are a must. Really digging the digital, ducking and tape modes. Fine modulatins. And presets, midi implementation ! It was going to stay forever, but I plugged the Flashback that was in a drawer and... It was still there, this small pedal was standing against the Timefactor.

With all that Strymon hype I decided to give it a go, sold the Timefactor, found a cheap Timeline and was floored. Incredible delays, dtape, dbucket are huge. Ice, pattern and lofi are powerful tool. I manage to set up a bunch of presets that are quite great, including a reverb, a chorus, a flanger and a rotary. But it required tweaking, and still does. And in the end after a few weeks I'm using only 2-3 of them. I'm also a bit pissed by the kill dry bug running since a few months.

And yesterday I took again my trustful Flashback out of the drawer, dotted 8th tape delay, and it was it. That particular setting I want and can't find on the Timeline. Gave a try to some new Toneprints that rock too. Right now the tiny blue is plugged in the Hagen, not the big grey.

It's very frustrating. I know that the Timeline should smoke the Flashback, but it doesn't (for me). I like to be able to tweak my effects, but I also like this "direct gratification" of a 3 knobs delay. I do want to prefer the Timeline, I heard an update should appear soon and maybe it will solve that issue. On the other hand, if the Flashback X4 gets a better midi implementation, it could be the solution for me.

Why fight it when you keep going back and finding the same thing works for you?

Yeah, that's what is bothering me. And I'm afraid that if I let the Timeline go that particular point will be solved, and that I'll miss all the rest of its awesomeness. For now it stays on the board, underused, for a few weeks, hoping the update will help.

I've tried and had many delays that I'm told I should really like because it's the latest and greatest, but I always go back to my DD-5.

I've tried and had many amps that I'm told I should really like because it's the latest and greatest, but I always go back to my Marshall.

I've tried and had many guitars that I'm told I should really like because it's the latest and greatest, but I always go back to my Stratocaster.

;)

I've had a lot of really nice, really expensive delays. I currently use a Boss DD-5. Not exactly the "best" sounding delay but it does it's thing and the repeats stay out of the way of the dry tone in a way a lot of "better" delays don't.

That, and the whole three knob thing. I hate programming delays.

Sometimes you just gotta go with what works. Just because the repeats sound better on their own doesn't mean the delay is a better fit for your style of playing.

tho there are things the timeline/timefactor can do that the flashback can't (ice crystals/shimmer delay etc..) ,

but there's no need to question yourself, trust your ears and gut , if something sounds good and works stick with it

if anything at least you know the timefactor and timeline aren't for you , i'm a bit of a delay junkie myself =0 i've been stable with the El capistan and a Boss space echo so far, although the new Way huge supa puss is very enticing... decisions decisions

Me too.

I've used a lot of delays over the years. But my favorite, so far, is the Flashback. In second place is the Empress Superdelay. Though, if I had an actual 2290, I'm sure that would take the lead.

Sold my alesis midiverb 4 once i found a damage control timeline. It all i use for reverb/delays.

Use whatever works best for you - at the end of the day they are simply tools (toys) to put ideas into reality.

I went out and bought the timefactor, used it for a few weeks. In the end, I got totally frustrated with all the settings and presets that I decided to sell it. Picked up the flashback x4 last week and I am completely thrilled with the simplicity and sound I am getting with it. I'm finding the simpler the better is sometimes the way to go on certain things.

This is why I haven't ever settled on a delay. I can't even decide which one to buy.

Of course, I have this problem with most effects. The only effect I've never purchased more than once was a chorus, and that's because I nailed it on the first try with my MIT Boss CE-2 that somehow has the MN3007/MN3101 that is only supposed to be in the MIJ versions.
