Couldn`t agree more! What Satch did was groundbreaking. He revolutionised instrumental guitar playing. What really sets him apart from almost all other players is the sheer amount of extremely creative songwriting. He has so many good compositions that i cannot think of one other player with a similar portfolio. In my eyes the greatest rock guitar player bar none. Yngwie was without a doubt a prodigy and made some great rock music but stopped evolving after the first records.
I am not interested in how complex the music is as long as the compositions are creative and add something that i never heard before. Guthrie Govan is a highly talented guitar player but i just cannot connect that much to his music since i strive to see the ingenuity in his compositions.

Another player that i find is greatly overlooked is Blues Saraceno. He put out a shitload of imho really cool stuff but didn`t get too much attention for that. Some examples that i love:

Getting myself ready for flaming here but I'm going with John Mayer. A brilliant creative player that has a great touch and great feel for the instrument and can write some great songs, not the strongest vocally but he knows his limitations and plays to his strengths but on guitar he is mesmerising.

great guitarist for sure. I feel he is not really ROCK if you know what i mean. He is funky, bluesy, jazzy. but he is not in MY estimation a "ROCK" guitarist.

Hmmm good point, how about Brian May? Rarely mentioned but an amazing player!

Define 'best'

So many great suggestions here. Even though I love love love Chris Poland's guitar playing, Satch for me is the "best" because to me he is the OVERALL package.

As a lifelong fan of his, I can easily say he can 1. play anything, and 2. sound really good doing it 3. has written major songs with big hooks that are unforgettable 4. crossed over to the mainstream where everyone knows who he is. To ME that is the definition of the best.
I have to agree with this.

I've got three suggestions.

Paul Gilbert
Michael Schenker
John Sykes

I gotta go with Mike Landau.

this, unbelievable guitarist.

And still think Jeff Beck smokes them all in this modern era.

So leaving out metal and prog players.

ALL THE ROCK GUITARISTS FROM THE MODERN ERA SUCK ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL THE GREATEST ROCK/METAL GUITARISTS CAME FROM THE 80'S. EVERYTHING HAS ALREADY BEING DONE AND INVENTED IN THE 80'S.....END OF DISCUSSION.

Guthrie Govan

I dig Guthrie, but he is also kinda sterile to me, he is very perfect. Satch has MOJO!! He is greasy and just rips. And more importantly his tone is thick and mean. Guthrie has too polite a tone for my taste.

As a Satch nuthugger I have to agree. He is my favorite rock guitar player ever!

Define modern era?

Too many greats to choose from in my opinion. To me, rock guitar began with EVH around 1978.

My all-time favorite guitarist is George Lynch from the "Back for the Attack" and "Wicked Sensation" era. George was king then.

I really love Jerry Cantrell as a player. Very unique.
