The Current KLON Situation?

Lots of really good options.

I owned a silver klon, finally sold it when I bought the KTR. Made a significant profit. If I were to go with a klone, my research has pointed me to either the aluminum falcon or the ARC effects.

Yeah I'm pretty much between the Arc and the Monsterpiece. Not sure how they differ, but they seem to to be lauded for their overdrive capabilities as well.

The ARC has an internal bass boost. It's a nice pedal. I ab'd the ARC, Aluminum Falcon and Stud. The Stud is about the same as far as lows with the bass boost on in the ARC. I preferred the Stud to all three.

Most overrated, over-hyped pedal ever made. It's a good sounding "always on" pedal but is far too open sounding to be an effective boost IMO...it has none of the mid-push that makes a tube screamer a great lead boost. It's more about effecting your overall tone than something you kick on for a solo.
There are plenty of other pedals that serve a similar function for a fraction of the price. I had one of the originals and it couldn't even make the cut for a spot in my live rig...unfortunately I sold it before the prices went from stupid to completely insane.

If you are playing with a mid-scooped sound, then a TS is indeed a better option. I do use a KTR as lead boost but I'm always running a lot of mids in my tone, for me it works great with a variety of amps. I was waiting for another badge of KTRs to be released to get another one but I guess I'll look into a Klone.

Well, I'm working on finalizing my order with Richard of Monsterpiece. Thanks for the help boys.

You will love it and Richard is very experienced in electronics and great to work with. Ask him which option makes it so if you turn both the gain and volume off with the pedal on your full signal still passes. This is one thing I like a lot with this pedal as your full signal will still pass with the gain and volume knobs off. This lets you blend in what you want from the pedal. The other Klon types I tried did not do this. Volume off and no signal passed. It may work this way with buffered or true bypass. I remember him telling me if there is a resistor on the switch it was one or the other. Can't remember but he'll know. Make sure to ask. I think mine has the resistor so it's true bypass but I'm not sure. If you want I can check. I would reccommend the one I have. Also I think on most of these the gain knob crackles some when you turn it. Might be a Klon thing but it's normal in this pedal.

So, you're saying that Richard offers a mod to use the pedal as just a variable tone knob? I'm going with the buffered version as I don't have a buffer in the chain and he recommends this version "all the way".

I'll have to check mine. I think it just allows your full signal to pass when the volume and gain are off even if the pedal is on.

Hmm, I don't know that I'd ever use it that way, though.

A thread on TGP classed klon wars was recently deleted. Pretty interesting back and forth between bill and one of the clone makers.....

Awesome Zack, let me know how it sounds in front of your amps.

 You bet.

Here's a pic of it so far (the one on the right)...

Bump for how do/did you lke it? I still have mine. It's hung around longer than any other pedal and many have come and gone.

Does he show up drunk and horny to single moms door with a klon in hand?

I'm liking it, Gary. I've never played an original or KTR so I can't compare, though.

I cannot compare either but I have owned five Klones. The Stud is still here. At least one or two of the Klones are suppossed to be closer to the original. The Stud is a little more agressive. I find teh stud to thicken th emids while retaining low end. I like the fell teh Stud adds. It' s up there with my favorite OD pedal.

Still waiting on the phone to ring from the last KTR run....I've all but given up on it. Maybe time to try a klone.

Yeah, I love the explosive attack it adds and how it thickens up the mids, while not losing clarity. I use a TS808HW on my board as well for more of a high mid boost. To me, the Klon is fatter in the low midrange. Curious, what your favorite OD pedal is?
