There was no need to when I was born - everyone knew they were. Why do you think we fought for the "mother country" in WW1 and WW2. That was a common expression. WW2 ended in 1945 - I was born just over 20 years after that. We used to have British passports.

When Hordes of immigrants from disparate cultures get LEGAL citizenship of your country it's not much good protesting and say "but but but I'm Australian". They have got citizenship.
