When we talking about communism we're talking about an economic ideology. As for the political environment, I think the US elite drools at the idea of being able to "manage" society like the Chinese do. They are the model for the west. Look who started lockdowns after China did! Look at the push for digital IDs, CBDCs and so on. Musk himself wants to make X like China's app forget the name that handles all your social interactions, finance, etc. It's what these tech billionaires want, and now because of Orange Jesus they are gonna have a go, when otherwise freedom loving Americans would reject it.
Communist economic ideology requires that additional level of social control and we aren't quite there yet because we have enough freedom loving Americans who reject it. Personally I think the "freedom" stuff is mostly idle talk cause dumbass too much time on their hands citizens, petty ass cops, and bureaucrats love to turn small stuff into big issues to feel important.
