The prog thread

3 is another amazing prog band; Joey Eppard (lead singer, guitarist) is the brother of Coheed's drummer. As much as I dig Coheed as well, 3 is a lot more diverse and "proggy".

Karnivool can get proggy at times too.

How about some Cynic? Their albums "Carbon Based Anatomy" and "Traced in Air" are pretty tasty.

While it's more in the metal spectrum, the last few Between The Buried And Me albums are pretty prog.

I listen to much listed here and there's some stuff I need to checkout.

Here's some recent stuff I listened to this evening..

I like the slap technique this guy is using in the video.

At a DT show I saw Andy McKee (I think that was his name) open up and play some really cool slapping and tapping stuff.

There were these two idiots behind me talking all kinds of smack about the guy's simple set-up and saying what is he thinking opening up fo DT then Andy started playing and everyone was completely quite the whole time (with a few "Damn"s being heard here and there).

I love prog and prog metal. Pink Floyd; Jethro Tull; Opeth; Katatonia; Yes; Genesis (Gabriel years); Marillion (Fish years); Supertramp... Etc. there are so many great ones. The best part is that few people like or understand half of this stuff. My wife says I listen to weird music.

I was hoping you would chime into the thread. Always liked your vids. Anymore? :D

Great Thread.

I generally prefer the rock side to metal (Genesis, Floyd, Rush etc.) but this track has some fantastic keyboard / guitar prog riffs:

Also surprised not to see Ozric Tentacles mentioned - An amazing catalogue of otherworldly psyhcadelic prog instrumental music and fantastic live.

Another really good one that's been around for a while but few have heard of is Vanden Plas from Germany. Their last two albums smoke (Christ0 and Seraphic Clockwork)...although all of their stuff (back to mid 90's?)is good.

Love prog!!!
BTW- the DT story with Andy McKee? Similar thing with 3 opening for Porcupine Tree. People behind me were joking about the drum kit; "Is that for a little kid?" and similar comments. And then they began to play. Went out and grabbed the first three 3 albums. Great band.

Oh- BTW- Reza? The Shadow Principle? Bought your album from Bandcamp today after checking the video in your sig. :D

Almost forgot.. latest addition to my "currently listening to"
(full album, not just the song, lol)

Planet-X and Derek Sherinian deliver the goods!
I really Planet X. I had Sherinian play on one of my Cds.

I discovered Vanden Plas about a year ago. F'en awesome stuff. Guitar player really knows how to lay back...then lay it down!

Some great stuff in this thread. I question whether some of it is truly "prog" (such as Primal Fear...love them but always considered them to be classic power metal?) but nonetheless still awesome material.

One grossly overlooked vintage prog-rock band is Glass Harp...simply incredible stuff, especially live. Had Phil Keaggy not left the band to follow his heart and compose Christian music, they very well may have gotten the same level of attention as some of their peers from that era. The cool thing for prog-rock fans now though is that they get together and do a limited number of shows each year and really bring it when they do.

Hey Charles, as a kid in the 70's I was an utter prog fanatic and the bands above were what kicked it all off for me in addition to the following;

Kansas
Styx
Uriah Heap ( they were borderline I guess)
Emerson Lake and Palmer

I had a very brief but intense love affair with Rush but that ended as soon as it began. It was crazy, for a period of time, I was an utter fanboi and about a year later, I didnt want to listen to them anymore..

These days, Im just a rock guy and prog rock does little to nothing for me beyond the bands listed above and even then, its a once or twice a year thing. Most prog rock since then sounds too pretentious and contrived to me and I dont think that there is anyone out there that can touch the writing or impact of the early stuff but thats just my opinion

Totally agree that the early 70s bands were the best!
