I discovered Vanden Plas about a year ago. F'en awesome stuff. Hey Charles, as a kid in the 70's I was an utter prog fanatic and the bands above were what kicked it all off for me in addition to the following;
Kansas
Styx
Uriah Heap ( they were borderline I guess)
Emerson Lake and Palmer
I had a very brief but intense love affair with Rush but that ended as soon as it began. It was crazy, for a period of time, I was an utter fanboi and about a year later, I didnt want to listen to them anymore..
These days, Im just a rock guy and prog rock does little to nothing for me beyond the bands listed above and even then, its a once or twice a year thing. Most prog rock since then sounds too pretentious and contrived to me and I dont think that there is anyone out there that can touch the writing or impact of the early stuff but thats just my opinion
