I had one for a while. It was a great amp.
I regret selling it more than my Caswells or Golub :(

Wow! Now that's sayin' something!
Ever since Chubtone here on R-Talk (Curt) has put up some clips with his Quickrod; I seem to be having a little gas issue...and now this post above.

Awesome amp. Get one. I had one for 2.5 years. It took my Fortin Cali Marshall to de-throne it. The Comp is said to be more agressive than the QR.

I have been absolutely delirious with my Quick Rod lately for single coil, hard rock, strat tones with my Evosevic modded YJM308. It's tone just floors me with my 50's style Duncan SSL-1's in it. To make sure I wasn't losing it, I had a tone war with my two vintage Marshall Super Leads vs. the Splawn with the strat and let's face it, the Splawn shouldn't have had a chance. Yet it was a clear winner. Gear 1 OD1 and that modded YJM308 and it was killer. Not an Yngwie clone tone, but in that ballpark but clearer and more Burn era Deep Purple mixed in with more thickness in the lows than a Marshall is capable of. I'm telling you guys, I'm in love!

Does it make any difference to the QR as to how easy it is to play the 50W Competition at lower volume?

I don't really need Clean-Clean, so I would be perfectly happy being able to switch from a Plexi style lower gain Gear 1 to Hot-Rodded Gear 2 and then use a boost for the rest. Only thing that worries me is the resale - guess it's much easier to move a QR for a good price than a Competititon.

Not necessarily. I see QRs for sale all the time. Hardly ever see a Competition for sale. Plus if you do buy new, cost is less for the Comp.

Yeah problem is, this is Europe, people hardly know Splawn, and the few that do will just know about the QR, maybe the Nitro, that's it.

BTW, who the fuck buys a Splawn Quickrod for cleans??

I did, at least for some parts of songs when I used my old Quickrod in a band situation 4 years ago. I had one of the first 4 pre clean channel models that came out in the fall of 2006. I liked the clean, it was more than good enough for my needs actually. The 3 pre clean would have been unusable for my needs. I'm way too lazy to drag around two amps I needed something that could pinch hit for both sides.

The 3 pre models had better gain tones though imo. I heard the new Quickrods are closer to the old 3 pre's on the gain side. But I don't want to buy new to find out and then have to flip it, if I come across a good deal on a used one I might just have to find out.

This is how I would use it.

Man, I need to move something so I can get one of these. I'll make it happen.

So much talk about Splawn right now. Guys are posting videos and others are talking about them. The GAS is killing me!

I spoke to Josh over at Splawn the other day and he told me the 2010's have a bit more gain on tap than the previous models and a bit more sag. I personally like the tight feel to the QR's, but change is cool too. I've seen a lot of Nitro's for sale lately but not many QR's. I want a new one now with the warranty!

Love the QR's, but I'm with you, they definitely DON"T need more sag.

I recorded with a 50 watt competition this past march. It belonged to the studio. It made me hate all my gear when I got home. :D Its a seriously awesome amp. I havent been the same since. Major GAS. But I think Id like a QR for the extra ch. Would probably suit my needs better.

Here is the song that has the competition by itself

Most guys say the Splawns are too tight and stiff. That EL34 sag is totally what I go for in a Marshall style amp. The tightness/sag of the Quick Rod is in the way you set the presence control and the treble control. Turn the presence off and tha treble to about 10 o'clock and it is Super Lead type spongey. Bring up the presence and lower the treble and you can get it extremely tight.

I didnt find the splawn to be stiff at all. Almost the oposite actually.

 I agree with Chubtone.
The Quickrod has a bit of flexibility.
Splawn makes a great amp.
I miss my Splawns.

I use a JTM45 and a 2203 so anything more than one channel baffles me. Never seen the need.

If I get the Splawn, I'll find one setting and leave it there for 10 years.

I just got a Quickrod from Chubtone about three weeks ago.
The amp is very sensitive to EQ settings so there is a learning curve in getting the amp set to your liking at first. Depending on how you set the presence and mids you can make it stiff or get some sag.
There are so many tonal variations in each of the the gears.

I am hoping to get the order placed by next weekend for qr and matching cab :D . And I to just talked to josh and he told me the samething that the 2010 have more gain on tap.
