I thought the older ones had more than enough gain myself.

Agreed. I never got above noon in gear 2 with od 2.

I also never had any issues with eq basically at noon across the board.

To hear some of the talk about Splawn, it makes me wonder if mine was magic or something

I think that the Splawn is one of the coolest modded Marshal tones out there.

Definitely best bang for the buck, especially used.

I just got a Quickrod from Chubtone about three weeks ago.
The amp is very sensitive to EQ settings so there is a learning curve in getting the amp set to your liking at first. Depending on how you set the presence and mids you can make it stiff or get some sag.
There are so many tonal variations in each of the the gears.

Very sensitive and definitely a learning curve. I tried the Marshall/ Wizard MC EQ settings and it didn't do the amp justice at all. I also think the QR sounds best with the matching cab with SB25's in it. I want to see how the big blocks sound though in a matching cab as well?

I've had a QR for years. I got a Splawn 4x12 with SB25's a few months ago and that rig never sounded better.

I'm interested in hearing some of the feedback on the tonal differences between the SB25's and the Big Block speakers?

Yeah there is something magical that happens with a QR when hooked up to some SB25's.

AFAIK, the Gears aren't footswitchable (you can switch between OD1 and OD2). Unless this is something new Scott put in.
50 watts - w/ half power switch (triode/pentode)
Single Channel (overdrive) - solo boost, OD1 (rhythm) /OD2 (lead) mode, 3 gear modes
Gears - 1st - Hot Rod Plexi, 2nd - Hot Rod 800, 3rd - Super Hot Rod 800
3 Button Footswitch - Gear control (see below) - #2 OD1/OD2 - #3 Solo Boost
Gear Control (footswitch) - toggle b/t 1st & 2nd gear (when amp set to 1st gear) or b/t 2nd & 3rd (when amp set to 3rd gear

The gears are footswitchable. (3 button footswitch). However you can't switch all three. Last line above describes it.
Just got my Patchmate 8 and GCX hooked up with my new rack setup, the Splawn QR, and a Marshall Vintage Modern 2266 Full Stack. For the record, the switching is exactly like bubba says above--it has been verified. Also, if you have the Rocktron All Access or a similar programmable foot controller that can send momentary switching signals, you can (as I am now) also switch the Vintage Modern head from Low to High Dynamic range. Just set the switch type to momentary and leave the on value at 127, the off value at 0--works like a charm.

Setup is pretty bitchin' even though 5 of my GCX loops are lost to switching, but it's set up like this:

Rocktron Patchmate--Slave out to tuner--main signal to loop 1:

Loop 1: BBE MaxCom Stereo Dual Compressor
Loop 2: TC1128 EQ/Spectrum Analyzer (Thanks Tom!!)
Loop 3: Tube Screamer
Loop 4: BOSS SD-1
Loop 5: BOSS Drive Zone (MIDI-Controlled)
Loop 6: BBE 362
Loop 7: Digitech MEQ-14 Stereo MIDI EQ
Loop 8: Rocktron xPression

The xPression will be connected directly to whichever head is going to be the "wet" in the W/D/W setup. The rack output will feed a Voodoo Labs amp switcher that allows me to run/switch between four different amps simultaneously. If only that thing were MIDI-capable I'd have the perfect rig (for me). The current amp lineup will be:

Splawn QuickRod
Diezel VH4
Marshall Vintage Modern
"Secret Sauce" rig.

If I hook up an external A/B/Y switch I can get an extra amp in the mix and that nod will go to my Hughes & Kettner TriAmp MK II or Trilogy.

Anyone know where I can get a 1-into-4 (5, 6) MIDI-controlled amp switcher?

Cheers,

I loved my Splawn Competition when I owned it. Great amp! I sold it to crwndblasphemy years ago and I think he has sold it again since then. :) Here are a few clips I did years ago. Everyone seemed to always like my "Brown Sound" clip. I was playing at TV volume and was able to get a great sound. The amp may be 50 watts but it was loud as hell:

Yup...I bought Romanianreaper's off him...I was thinking I would just run that, since it was 50 watts and one channel....but my quickrod had more mojo, and not as hifi sounding, so I dished the comp. It was still cool though! Just didn't need it.

About 5 years ago I ordered a sweet looking Splawn Comp from Scott. I just couldn't gel with it. It was bright and steril sounding. I've heard many great clips of Splawn amps. Maybe mine had a bad tube or something.

:) So what QR sounds better...new or old?

I would really like to try out a 2010 QR.. But for now I have a Marshall Plexi modded my Splawn... It is basically a Pro Mod but one of the First versions and it killz

I've got an old 3 pre QR and it's a beast! Definately not a one trick pony...so many tones in this amp!

It's very sensitive to woods, pups and speakers. Keeps your playing honest and notes just jump off the fretboard. palm mutes will shake your pant legs while retaining total clarity on the top end...just a freakin killer amp that I cant believe doesnt get more love over here...especially with all the great players on this forum

Scott runs a first class shop down there. Just a super guy
