The Webers and RI greenbacks do sound good for that vintage sound but I'm not sure I am digging them for anything hotter anymore. I'm finding both my 2204 circuits sounding fizzy when boosted and the common denominator is the speakers and cab. I know V30's record the best but am I crazy to think it's time to ditch these and go with a regular Marshall loaded G12T-75? Anyone using a good ol 1960 cab with stock speakers around here or are they not Rig Talk worthy!?

I've got 1986 G12-T75 mixed with UK made V30's that my 5150 head runs.

And a 1984B cabinet with M75's….used to have a quad of 1986 G12T-75 in it but split them up to use in the Peavey.

Nothing wrong with 4 G12T-75s in a Marshall. Who cares what anybody else thinks. Eff 'em.

Which is your fave cab with the 800 and Friedman you have in your sig pic?

I love my Legacies and Gray Wolves but for months now my main cab has been a Marshall 1960B with old, beat 75s. Sounds awesome. I used to HATE those speakers but they sound great in this cab.

A friend had an old early 80's JCM800 slant cab with the original 12T's in it. It was one of the best cabs I have ever heard. All my amps sounded great through it. My DSL 100 never sounded so good. I've been in the hunt for one locally ever since.

+1. When I used to run a Marshall head I had two 1960 cabs with the G12T-75 and they sounded really good. I recorded a couple of clips a few years ago comparing V30, Splawn SBs, G12T-75s and something else that I can't remember. Some guys on the Splawn forum were surprised with how good the 75's sounded. The same 75's that guitar forum land seems to look down at.  Shit, might have to turn a couple of knobs on the amp to get the tone you like is all.

The 800 runs thru the 1984B cab with 65w M75.
The BE-100 runs thru the Bogner cab with 65w BM75.

800 sounds great thru the M75 but has a bit more bite thru the BM75s and the same goes for the BE-100. Scumback speakers are just great IMHO, really smooth.

The Marshall cab far right has UK made Greenbacks in it. I like running the 800 and BE-100 thru that too. The GB are a little bit more upfront in their sound.

The Peavey cab with V30/G12T-75 sounds best with the 5150 head.

The 5153 100w head sounds best thru its own cabinet.

The combo has BM75s in it now...

I had the 800 head running the 1984 cab with G12T-75s too, and it sounded great too, the 1984B cab has some serious thump to it. The G12T-75 are the 1986 model I got from James Lugo. I've got newer G12Ts too but the older ones sound better to my ears.

I probably use my early 90's Marshall slant with stock G12T-75's at 50% of my gigs. I have no issues with those speakers whatsoever. That's why amps have EQs. Turn the knobs - it's amazing what will result.

Yes and no. You can turn the EQ knobs all you want, but you won't change the speaker's voicing. You can't dial out the mid hump and harsh highs of the V30's.

From what I recall you are not too far from Calgary. I have some cabs coming with Jensen Electric Lightnings, they should be here Mid February. If you are down in Calgary, or Cochrane sometime around then you are welcome to swing by, and give them a try. They are killer speakers!!!

I get the mid hump of V30's but not the harsh highs. I know it's been stated many times, but V30's smooth out a lot after they're broken in. I get the love/hate relationship guys have with them. As much as I like other speakers (especially Greenbacks) nothing cuts through in a live situation like V30's do.

True, maybe the harsh highs are only present in newer V30's that aren't broken in. But the point is, speakers make a huge difference in overall tone - and you can't just decrease mids and treble and get what a different set of speakers can give you.

I agree. You can't make a V30 sound like a Greenback or a Greenback sound like a Blue or whatever by adjusting eq settings. The inherent sound qualities of a particular speaker are present no matter what you run through it. Some days I wish I could just grab my SLO and pedal board and go into a room with a bunch of 4x12's with different speakers so I could see which one I liked best. Alas, that can never be.

Ever consider Eminence Legends?

Never tried the legends.. have some super V's (discontinued) which are solid but i never really played at the volumes necessary to open them up. Not many eminence fans around here though!

Yeah, THAT would be cool - try your amp with every speaker, and pick the best sounding one - in a controlled environment like a back room of a music store!

I'm pretty far removed from Calgary... Ottawa lol... but thanks for the offer! Who is building your cabs?

You mentioned that you where concerned with fizz, and I think the Legends are like a Celestion clone, but smoother. I haven't tried them either. I know Soldano recommends them for the SLO. There are several guys over at Guitar Amp Board who dig them. The price point is very reasonable too. I've got a Bogner 4x12 loaded with V30's and Warehouse Veteran 30's in an X pattern. I did have all Veteran 30's loaded at one point, but I felt like my tone was too smooth and I found myself missing the bite of Celestions. If you're looking for smooth and less fizz, you might wanna look into the Veteran 30's. Hope I'm not giving you too many options now. :D

They are pair of Forte 3D 1x12 cabs. I can't wait to get them. I thought that you were in Red Deer, but I must have you mistaken for someone else.

Also FYI Eminence speakers are awesome!!! and you can get them for cheap through long and mcquade. Even cheaper than ebay etc. The Legend GB128 is based on a greenback, but a bit more modern. My favourite is the Wizard which is a G12H30 with a bit of V30. It is a loud speaker, and cuts like a knife!!!! The Delta Pro 12A is a bit of a darker EVM 12L, and sounds sick cranked up very loud!!! I also personally think the Eminence speakers are built better than Celestions, the frames seem more solid, and the paint on them is nicer as well. Plus they are cheaper, and made in the USA instead of China. But the Jensen Electric lightning is an amazing speaker, that is why I am getting a pair of them.
