Thinking of getting a Digitech GSP 1101. Good idea?

Just a couple of questions if someone can answer them -

Is it reliable and how easy is it to use?

What kind of power amp should I get with it, solid state or tubes? Got a Marshall 2x12 already so cab isn't a problem.

Thanks, guys!

Mike

Love mine!! No issues what so ever. Power amp is personal preference. I use both SS and Tube! I perfer my RT2-50.

Mine has been utterly reliable. Update to current beta firmware and it's awesome. I ran mine with a Mosvalve MV-962 then switched to a Peavey Classic 60/60. Sounds much better with tubes.

I'm curious as well...I would only be interested in the effects and not the onboard amps.

love mine, editing through x-edit is a breeze. i dont know how accurate most amp models are but i found some which i like very much n they sound great. i much prefer it to other modellers though have not tried the more expensive ones.
i gig with mine direct to board n it sounds good. control 2 footcontroller is also awesome!!

It's been flawless easy to use. I only use fx and the control 2 pedal w it. Simple set up.

Def tube power amp to pair w it if your gonna use amp models.

I keep going back and forth between this and the RP1000. Only reason the RP is winning is not needing to buy the foot controller.

cant go wrong with either, but the gsp and control 2 may be a better investment over time if u decide to grow ur rack, add preamps, get a head with channel switching so the gsp11010 could switch channels via a midi switcher etc. for plug n play ease, rp1000 wins but i hate bending down just to tweak a bit....

Love mine for FX only. I haven't been able to get any decent modeling tones out of it besides cleans.

I hear you. The RP will probably win for now. Eventually I may move to a rack set up by who knows. To the OP, I had an 1101 2 years ago and liked it. I ended up selling as I tend to buy effects units on a whim and refuse to take the time to learn them properly.

Any news on a new Digitech rack unit?

How about the Marshall Valvestate poweramps? Any good?

go with a mosvalve instead... matched against a valvestate, my mosvalve had more punch and was more present with 2 guitars, bass, drums and vox....it always stood out more and the other guitarist was always turning up too much to compensate, which didnt work out real well as you can imagine.

for jamming alone, the marshall will be ok i guess....his sounded flat to me with my preamp hooked up to it though. we tried a lot of different combinations...he finally dumped it and got a boogie 20/20 IIRC and that little bastart roared in comparison to both solid state power amps.

I bought one a couple months back and I'm digging it. I've managed to get the mark4 preset to sound pretty good, but it needed an 808 (built in sim) on top to get into the m4's lead channel gain territory. Also I found a cab sim (digitech alt?) that sounds pretty damn close to the 1x12 EVM cab I'll be using for gigging. Using a rocktron velocity 150 power amp and that sounds pretty good.

I originally bought a valvestate combo (vs100r) but running the gsp into the fx return colored the tone so much it was unbearable.

So now I have a very compact, light, rig that replaces my old mark4 half stack that gets about 85% there (100% for unsuspecting audience members) with a small fraction of the hassles. ]

oh, records direct via usb very well, which is a definite plus for me...

I bought my GSP1101 for the effects and the hook-up flexibility. The digital models.. meh... The 4-cable hookup works great and the unit is easy to use. I prefer it to the RP1000 because I can choose any foot controller that I want to switch it with.

I've been very pleased with mine, which I got only about two weeks ago with a Control 2. I'm running 4cm with my Pittbull UL, and I've found some very usable modeling in there since I haven't had a chance (yet) to pick up a midi switcher so that I can do channel switching on my amp through the Control 2. I'm running 5 switch, 5 effects (stompbox style) right now. I upgraded to the C63 mustbebeta update. The modelers I use a bit are the 68 Jump Panel, the Triple Rectifier, and the Orange OR sim. Right now, I just have 5 patches: one is my amp with switchable boost, whammy, delay, and lex hall reverb. The second is the Orange OR120(? or is it 100, I can't remember), third is the Triple Rec, 4th is a Fender Twin for cleans, and the 5th is a boosted Jump Panel with delay and reverb for ballad style leads.

When I run through my amp, the sound is pretty convincing. In a band mix, I still tend to gravitate towards my Pittbull preamps for distorted sounds when I want to cut, but for rhythm hard rock, the Triple Rec gets a lot of burn, and I'm using the Twin modeler for my go-to cleans. Rehearsals have been really nice on my ears, too. My bassist is going direct from his SansAmp, and the other guitarist has a sound shield in front of his miked Mesa Maverick. We've got the drums miked also, and I'm running from the XLR (Cab sim) out of my GSP1101 with my Pittbull's power section on mute. The result is very low volume in the room, and sound clarity with all of us having control over our mixes, including a click track. As we prep for recording an album, this is pretty awesome (and we've been recording our rehearsals with ease). As a band, we are actually getting better as a result of this set up, and having very passable cab simulation makes it possible. Otherwise, to get any type of decent tone with my UL, I'd have to crank it a bit to a) compete with bleed from my drummer and b) get it to sound nice.

The downsides (granted, I haven't used X-Edit, so my patches have been made straight on the GSP): Only one mod effect available at one time. I may pick up an old Quadraverb to integrate in with this for this very reason. Second is expression pedal control assignment. I still don't get how to assign the whammy to this, and don't know how the Control switch works. Third is some of the choices for effects in certain blocks. I wish there was an independent pitch block so that I could, say, run, a whammy through a phaser, etc. I also like to get really chaotic sounds, and this potential seems limited with the GSP. I'll need to tune my noise gates a bit also.

All told, though this is my first foray into modeling, and it's been surprisingly pleasant. Considering I got the GSP1101 and Control 2 for $430 including shipping, I'm pretty happy. Very low noise, which was a big selling point. That said, I'm still going to be running my Whammy 4, POG, and maybe even a phaser in front of my board depending on what I end up going with as far as a Quadraverb or something like that.

Also, WAY less tap dancing.
