Thinking of selling everything and getting a Kemper...

I wonder if a few of us happy RT folk should maybe pop over to the FAS forum and ask what those useful and friendly members have to say? I mean, all in all, I am very pleased with my Axe-II, but bottom line is it is tweakville for certain. I've managed to pull personal and custom presets off from varied users, and this saves me time in GSM (Green Screen Mode :bleh: - staring at the panel on the Axe). We should ask their collective usership how they feel the Kemper stacks up?

In fact, I may need to post that over there right now.... See if I can help you guys out.

I could for sure... Honestly I just haven't followed what's happening with it. I've got the Axe-II working well, but it is what it is...it's not perfect. The Kemper may be worth a test drive :D

Do it. The Kemper is everything people wish the Axe was but isn't. It is the game changer people are waiting for.

[edit] a small Kemper clip,

Just a 1977 JMP profile into a V30 using my JJ1 guitar with JB pickup. Plug n play!

Sounds great!

Oh shit :inlove:

I've got both the Axe2 & Kemper. Both are great. The Kemp can't do anything that the Axe can't do, but for most people the Kemper is more plug n play for sure.

The Axe2 is way more versatile but I love owning both units. Great stuff!! (tube amps are in trouble!!) lol

I kid you not.. :)
I rarely play a "real" amp these days. I bought an Apogee Jam/Amp Kit and a cheapie iPhone and believe it or not, that's what I use most of the time. It's not that it sounds better than the real deal it's just easy to sit there on the couch and play.

So that got me thinking, I mostly record... why do I need all this stuff?

Am I nuts?

Good luck trying to profile those wierd mids you've gotten used to. :D

Sounds like an expertly recorded amp to me. It's pretty awesome.

HAHAHAHAHAHAA! You might be right... unless weird mids are in the fingers.

Bottom line is with the kemper you get what you put in! There are shit profiles out there, and there are top dogs who took the time using solid preamps and good mics. You have to search through the poo.

That being said...there are very good options to getting good recorded tones. I use a Weber attenuatorwith my head...has a line out and can record dead quite, being it is a dummy load, and just use cab impulses. Sounds sick!

Yeah but it comes with a bunch of profiled amps already and there seems to be a ton of profiles to sift through. Yeah some won't be that good, but I'm sure there will be a bunch that are really good.

Can you get one and return it if you don't like it? If so I'd do that, profile your amps and live with it for a couple weeks only playing the profiles.

If you already have a good audio interface and want the perfect guitar tone, the kemper is nice. otherwise
if you're a performing musician and like live stuff with easy tweaking and very good support community i think the Axe is the best thing
I really like my axe better since firmware 7. I could now use it instead of a tube head with a FRFR setup and get the same dynamics and feeling
I usually use my axe with a 2 guitar patch and my bassist plug his bass in it directly through 1 fr speaker and i use the other output for my guitar.
There was a time his bass was broken so we did a "bass emulation" patch with a pitch shifter and it was sounding exactly like a bass guitar into a bass amp.

That's what I call flexibility!

Hey thanks for checkin that clip out fellas. It was truely nothing special. Just the stock JMP 77 Profile with my guitar straight in. I think I cranked the gain up a little because why not but man.. It was just a few second process to hit record on my DAW, sounds perfect. I like the way it sounds nice and raw.

Also, this thing has weird mids in SPADES. I mean you want wierd mids? Like full on 30% of profiles have em. Of course add your OD of choice for extra sex.

Also, I am the type of guy that doesn't use effects much if at all and nice dry amp tone is essential. Kemper has it! I can't detect any 'processed' quality to it. Its goddamn amazing.

I love my Kemper. I haven't even tried profiling any of my amps yet, but I've found enough good stuff on the Kemper download page to keep me busy for a long time. The thing to me is, it's just really easy to play through. The Axe Fx, all I seemed to be doing was scrolling through parameters, which I HATED. This, I twist a few knobs, and I'm playing, which is what I should be doing anyway.

Bulb and Tosin are using this bass-pitch regularly in their recordings to basically cover the same ground a 4 stringer would. I've not toyed with it too much - I've been DI and headphones mostly with the Axe-II, and I think to really give it a good shot, I oughta get it running through a proper FRFR system. Last I was running the Ultra through a 2/90/2 (chosen for its clarity and massive headroom) through a variety of cabs. It definitely worked alright, but to truly "get into" its capabilities, I think I need to get more "set up" with it. Eargoggles and DI aren't shit compared to this thing going large through a Mackie or the like.

That said, I'm not using it to jam/gig, so I may just go the passive Atomic wedge route. You can't tell me the active Wedges can be any more "neutral" on their own power than the passives would be going through a 2/90/2 poweramp.

Thoughts?

I'm going to dig a little more into Kemper. I think the win with Kemper is it's less geek, more player. They made it with bigger knobs, a more familiar kinda layout (maybe - just going on a whim here), etc. that amp players are more comfy with. Staring at that cold, lifeless, green-screen of torment has its bad moments. If it's not at eye level you hurt yer back.

Mojo

I have a decent recording setup and that's really all I do. I record. I don't gig. That's the main reason why the Kemper is enticing to me.

Interesting thread. I don't play out often, but I like having a few 100w heads and a few combos around.

The latest purchase is one of those little Yamaha practice amps. The Kemper is much much more than that. Maybe it is the way to go for the family room setup I play when watching TV and chillin.

So if you profile an amp, is there a profile for each change of any knob on it, or does the thing attempt to remember the DNA of the amp and allow you to adjust it?
