this guy could have ruled...

Yeah..we all wish Dio had kept going. Such a talented vocalist...

:D

Ronnie did rule it and Viv said a lot of dumb things but I liked Viv back then...he kicked ass! Its too bad and a shame how things went down between them.

yeah, I never really understood fully what happened aside from the rumor mill. I got to see him 6 times with RJD, the guy was amazing.
Some of Ronnie's best stuff was written with Vivian... again, some ;)

yeah. Hard to say what the deal was between Ronnie and Viv. The fallout happened right around the Hear 'n Aid time, and I recall that RJD said some very nice things about Viv during that time, but who knows what really happened. Wasn't Dio head of the musicians union at the time?

Check out his guitar work on Riverdogs first disc.

It was a precursor to the unplugged-movement (to my way of thinking) so there are all of these acoustic beds laid down and Viv just KILLS over the top of them.

Totally awesome.

Not the best song on the disc, but its the only one that pops up with a quick search.

There is a video out there of someone asking Ronnie about Vivian and Ronnie says "I hope he dies". Kind of ironic now that Ronnies dead. Vivian chose a cushy job in Def Leppard over the life of a gunslinging shredder, thats all.

Viv said in a recent guitar mag that playing in a band with RJD was like playing in a band with his dad. He said something to the effect that they were both from two different generations of musical taste. That same article mentioned briefly about Jake E. Lee's short stint with Dio. Jake claimed that Ronnie told him to simplify his parts so they wouldn't interfere with his vocals.

I can understand the dad comment. I read Viv talking about recording Holy Diver, from what I can remember anyway, and he said that he didn't love his tone but Ronnie said to plug straight into a JCM800 and turn it up. Viv had some kind of issue with that but was reminded that he was a hired gun and to do as told. Players of that caliber usually have issues with being told things like that.

I am not good at all but remember having similar issues with a drummer at one time who liked a fill in second guitar players tone better than mine because mine was too thick and the other guy (using a Line 6 dialed into a fizzy scooped mess) was closer to King Diamonds tone. We were playing AIC, Sabbath, and other late 90's cover tunes.

He hopes he fucking dies...he is an asshole... leaves no doubt about how he feels. Just because he got to be famous does not mean he didn't have his douche bag moments.... don't we all.

  Screw Dio.............I loved him & all but Def Fukin' who is waaaaay more familiar than the Holy Diver! :D

Aside from all the Dio drama, Vivian's playing in that initial video is on fire and it just seems odd to me that he put all that away to be a back-up guitarist in a band that seems more interested in being the next Mott the Hoople recently.

Saw him during the Holy Diver tour, everything was rocking then Ron said something to Vivian and for the rest of the show he just stood in one spot staring at the floor. Back stage everything seemed polite and professional though.

He can badmouth Vivian all he wants but without the Rainbow In the Dark riff, Dio's career would have been over by '84.

Some singers loose the mojo when the guitar player leaves. Like when Billy Idol and Steve Stevens parted ways. Steve made the sound that made Billy Idol famous.

Singers......

Yeah he was really good back in the day. Seems like a waste of a major talent to me.

Glad to see he's making music that really matters to him now.(and the 12 people that bought the last 4 Def Leppard cds)

I don't know what went down between VC and RJD, but it does not does not diminish my respect for both of them. As for the Def Leppard thing... who would you rather play for? a bunch of dudes getting turned on by your shred or a bunch of chicks getting turned on by your songs... I will take the chicks.
