kotzen could make that fellow look foolish most likely.

he is skilled enough to have the right to rip on petrucci's technique if he feels compelled to do so.
doesn't make it politically nice or right, but i hear what he's saying about just being able to play fast while sacrificing tone for speed sake, or not adhering to the "rules" of legato technique.
and i get the distinct impression he doesn't care about the majority of people that will be turned off by him.
i'm not offended by his viewpoint at all and would love lessons from this guy!
it's the same thing an advanced classical pianist or violinist faces when they don't stick to the very strict rules of the game. they get ripped on by their instructors to the point of anger and humiliation. but if they survive they eventually enter a performance level the majority of players here would never ever reach. perfection.
I don't play classical music, perfection isn't my goal...
I'd rather listen to the Heartbraker solo than this guy...

and i am confident he's no more interested in the heartbreaker solo than you are in his trip.
but invite this guy and jimmy page to take turns soloing over more than just a I-IV-V blues and my money is on legato man.

OK, Invite this guy and Scott Henderson and my money is on Henderson, who wouldn't conform to the "rules of real legato"...
My whole thing is that there are no "rules" in art.

There is a big difference in not liking what somebody does and calling it bad...

Here we go again with "having the right to say..." nonsense. Here's the deal, the guys that usually don't shit where they eat are the ones working. And whether the guys that have to invoke "their right" aren't working by choice is another discussion.mentoneman":27me6byd said:GtrWiz":27me6byd said:mentoneman":27me6byd said:i use the classical example because at the level of execution this guy is at, his head is probably in that space.

you might be right about the Henderson thing
Thats a much better comparison in any event
But I don't think it's realistic to say all's fair for art's sake.
if you've never heard a player before and thought to yourself "this guy stinks" then you are being neither honest nor practical.
derek bailey is a perfect example.
sure he can play whatever but I have every right to say what he does is ridiculous trash regardless of his fan's opinions.
Dude, that to me is a hell of a compliment.GtrWiz":9tlsu2kl said:rynnce":9tlsu2kl said:Reminds me of the Berklee grad I used to take lessons from. I quit after he told me anyone could play like Buddy Guy.
We're not all bad! I took harmony courses all the way to the highest level before I realized that there aren't any rules...
But yeah, I knew a guy that said Buddy Guy made a guitar sound like a trombone. Maybe the same guy?!?!
Absolutely true and I dont even think Yngwie has bashed anyone in YEARS...degenaro":1yqb5ni9 said:Here we go again with "having the right to say..." nonsense. But aside a few guys-Yngwie- comes to mind I can't think of many good players spending all that much energy in bagging other's shit.
