I'd love to hear a clip with other speakers. [...]

Me too. I like the sound though, especially the way it ends up right between vintage and modern. Is CCV the more "Marshall-y" or "Mesa-y" sounding version of the two new amps?

Id do some clips with other speakers but i dont have my marshall cab at home , its at the rehearsal studio. . .im going to pull the trigger on two CL80's pretty soon and try the mixture. The ccv is the Vintage (marshally) and the ccm is the modern (that mesa boogie wishes they sounded like :D ) The ccv can do the modern thing real real good, better then any modern amp ive heard or played in my 14 years of playing guitar and being a live/studio engineer and gear whore   Fact of the matter is , this amp can do anything so please don't let my style let you think it's only good for High gain chugga chugga metal. The rock and roll tones are legendary, the blues tones are astounding and it makes me want to put this amp in Warren Haynes hands because i can just hear Warren using this amp... The cleans are huge, and chimey, or they can be rich and smooth for like a jazz style player, or someone who wants that dark slightly overdriven blues natural overdrive sound. It will do 80's hair tones for days and without a doubt has the brown sound built in.

This is what I can tell you so far - I used it at rehearsal and its cuts through incredibly well and just plain sounds big. Ive used it at home for some late night quiet jamming (bedroom volume) and the master volume is absolutly sick. The tones stay consistent through the whole volume span which i find to be extremly helpful. This amp really sounds incredible at any volume, which i have never had luck with some other amps. It really does adapt to different guitars and players which I absolutly love..It captures the character of a tele or a strat, then plug a Paul into and it SCREAMS! Lead tones are fluid and just fly off the board , rhythm tones are tight and articulate and CUT. It's easy to play yet lets the hands of the player tell the story...

The different dip switches above the gain pots, punch control, presence, master volume, solo boost and etc are VERY powerful tone shaping tools. The harmonics are just insane, in sounds like my guitar is just wrapped in them....it SINGS, and the voicing capabilities are just plain silly...
what an amp he has built. This thing is a tank and the build quality is SOLID and military spec, yet beautiful... i love the little American Flag on the back! Built right here in the USA!

I'm very happy and couldn't ask for anymore. It is seriously the tone i've seeked for my whole life, I won't say I'm completly done buying amplifiers, anything i do buy will sit next to my CCV and I will say that anything i buy from hear on in will be up against a serious challenge to top what i've now experienced and heard. Mark has raised the bar of guitar tone!

Oh yeah, that review helped my GAS. :gethim:

How difficult would the swap be to change the 6550's to EL34 just out of curiosity? I know there is at least 1 bias resistor change needed.

Well in a JCM800 or JMP/Plexi, as far as i can remember... the two 150k (or 82k, it depends) bias resistors in a 6550 amp need changing out for 220k's for EL34's. And also a 27k resistor to replace the resistor before the diode.
Does anyone possibly have a gut shot of an 800 and point these out? I would really like to try some EL34's in this beast.

could be sick with el34 try the Ruby el34str HUGE bottom and nice crunch... the winged C's are just rediculous to... Cant go wrong with either dude....

Here ya go!

The two Bias resistors on your amp, will be most likely 150k's. Swap those both out and put in 220k's. Then the Bias Supply Dropping Resistor located below the Bias diode, needs to be 220k in a 50watt JCM800. :)

Man this amp sounds great!

I'd love to get one. I had an Uberschall that was modified by mark and it sounded insane, a little too dark, but insane none the less! It doesn't help that my guitars are as dark sounding as they come!

Anyhow really enjoyed the clip, and if you could do a lead clip that would be cool too!

Glad you got it!

Peace

Isn't it supposed to be 27K ?

Ah ok.I opened her up and the two bias resistors are already 220K.The bias supply dropping resistor in there is 120K and that one needs to be swapped out for 220K and I should be good right? Where do you prefer the bias with the EL34's in?

Yeah just swap the 120k to a 220k and then adjust the bias accordingly via the trim pot.

Depending on the plate voltage, it can vary.. but i like my EL34's biased ever-so slightly on the hotter side. My JMP 100w is set around 38mV, and it reads 480vdc plate voltage.

Awesome! Just got to find a 220K resistor somewhere.

just 1 ma above 70% dissipation

I got it done with no problems. The EL34's biased right up with the resistor change and it sounds great but I only had a pair of the reissue Mullards that I really didn't like in my Quickrod. They've got quite a bit of use on them too so they're a bit tired.I'm going to have to get a set of Winged C's because those were awesome in the QR.The EL34's definitely have something that I like that the 6550's didn't.

Ok I got the Winged C's and a set of Chinese 9th gens for the preamp and it sounds crushing now! It covers a lot of ground now from 80's metal to modern chunk and when I plug into the low input I can get blues and 70's rock with no problem.I'm getting some really nice chimey cleanup with the guitar's volume knob too.Pretty sick for a single channel amp.One of the power tubes is a little hotter than the other but I just biased the hotter one to the right range and the other is just a little colder. No biggie.BTW sorry Nick I didn't mean to hijack your thread man I was just pretty excited to get these new tubes in.

LOL dude i dont care lol ...

Sick! i loved the low gain input of that amp, so bluesy and BALLSY ... an sd1 boost in front was brutal.... Im so glad you still have that amp! and good to know the el34's sound sweet in there, i figured they would!

Fantastic!! I knew you would like it with those tubes
