Thoughts on the new AIC?

New dude hardly ever sings by himself on the any of the new material (this record or last one). It is always the dual harmony thing happening which honestly gets a little old. I would prefer to hear a good frontman wailing a killer melody.

I remember when Jar of Flies came out I thought the same thing. The harmony vocals are too much. I dig them but not every single syllable of every single song.
Yeah, I think that's by design unfortunately. My 2nd favorite tune on BGWTB was Last Of My Kind, still the only track where Will sings alone. I get that it's Jerry's baby, but I feel they are wasting a huge talent. I mean they've gotta have demos that he sings more in the lead vocal role, right? Or maybe not, maybe he doesn't push that angle at all.

You would think so but I bet the demos have Jerry singing by himself... ;)

LOMK is my fave tune on the BGWTB. Awesome tune.

My thoughts are that they shouldn't be calling themselves AIC anymore...

Then, AC/DC after Bon Scott, VH after Roth, Sabbath after Ozzy, etc. should have all renamed their respective bands band.

That band still is AiC to me, though Layne Staley obviously is missed. I too wish the album weren't as mellow and that they would let the new guy cut loose. Saw them live and Will DuVall impressed me. I'd think he'd be even better in the studio if they gave him the chance.

I dig it!
As much as I love Facelift and Dirt I'm glad they don't keep trying to remaking them.

Here's the math

New AIC = Original AIC - Visceral Anger

The screaming stopped when we lost Layne

I was never a big fan of the original Alice. Some cool tunes, but I never went out of my way to listen to them.

I have these last two albums and I dig them. Cool stuff.

I do, however as someone mentioned, get tired of every vocal note being harmonized. It's tiresome. Just let the singer sing the song. :)

I love the title track...trippy and powerful. 'Breath On A Window' starts out with a driving rhythm, similar to 'Lessons Learned' (BGWTB), but with that classic AIC sound that reminds me of "What The Hell Have I?", then goes into a more experimental section and all of a sudden spirals into a catchy, hypnotic, almost rock ballad feel - definitely more gutsy than the usual AIC formula.

There are some tracks that grow a little tedious towards the end - Voices & Low Ceiling. It seems Duvall has been under-utilized (again)...there were parts I was missing what his intensity could have brought to this album...just that he could've taken some parts over the top...can't say I'm surprised, though...

I also like 'Lab Monkey', 'Stone', 'Hung On A Hook', 'Choke', 'Phantom Limb' - great collab. between Duvall and Cantrell. 'Pretty Done' reminds me of the Tripod era. I like that. A good mix of sludge and psychedelia. Still, there times where the tempos drag their feet and some of the songwriting gets tedious and repetitive. Guitars sound f***ing amazing throughout. Jerry's definitely got them tones dialed in on this one. Album is definitely growing on me as a whole.

I admittedly listened to the track "Stone" on repeat all the way to class today... that's probably like 8 or 9 times in a row, the groove to that song is AWESOME, that fucking guitar riff!

I've only heard a couple of tracks but really dig them so far- guitar tones are killer and songs heavy as hell. Glad they're back and going strong. I agree with the over-harmonization on the vox, but other than that, win!

Agreed...I had it on the radio as well and love the groove to it and the tone. My 6 yr old in the back seat said...."daddy...what is this because it rocks!"......can't beat that!

Ha! I did that a few times last week when it was the only track I had. I felt like a 15 year old girl with Bieber on repeat :D

It's a cool Cantrell album. I quit thinking of them as AIC.

Layne brought certain qualities besides his awesome voice, like a dark sense of humor and timing...
He added another dimension to the music.
It's a lil flat, straight forward and not as...digestable(?) without him.

All that being said, still a fan and still dig the new music. Glad Cantrell's doing stuff.
:)

I think it's good, but not grabbing me as much as I'd hoped. I think part of the problem is the tracks they leaked and have been playing live are the heaviest on the record so that set an expectation for a different kind of record IMO.

like a few said , they need to let the new guy stand on his own and not harmonize the shit out of everything

I'd also add the 'darkness' to there music these days seems pretty forced ......at the same time when layne was in the band they did have an element of humour and now that's completely gone

Not a fan of the cliché one note bend riffs jerry keeps churning out that are a couple of chromosomes away from some shitvana abortion like 'scentless apprentice'

Agreed.

I agree with Animal. Jerry needs to STFU and let Will do his thing.
