Not stock super lead, of course, but not 5150 lead channel preamp gain on 7 gain...Gainfreak":1iqn1poz said:Are you going by memory or do you have a clip because I have a live bootleg with Joe playing with ozzy and he plays with an assload of gain IMHO. With that said, I'm pretty sure I can get that tone with the cali mod and some effects but I'm going by the boot I have.

Exactly my position on this too Steve. When I saw him live the whole time I was floored by his tone. And when I listen to the youtube clips and listen to the live CD from south America it's the same as what I remember. Definitely more gain than a Super Lead but nowhere near what I'm hearing from the current levels of gain these modern modders are able to get. I'm sure if Jose or Lee Jackson knew how to get as much, smooth, useable gain as the moddern day modders do, they would have done it and we would have used it.

I'm not talking modern gain but the boot I have has a TON of it and I'll have to humbly disagree because Jose did have the technology back in the 70's.
This is the tone that I have on the boot and it's a lot of gain IMHO. it also has that humped up mids that i dig and fortins cali does it in spades. all IMHO!
