I consider Tom Morello the Eddie Van Halen of the 90's

Dime was the VH of the 90's, but Morello is an excellent player and actually started with 80's shred like all the other guys from that era. The cool thing is that he took it in a new direction and wrote some of the coolest rock riffs ever (IMO) in the process.
His "guitar hero" status shouldn't be measured by technicality, but by originality!

Interesting fact: Tom and Adam Jones(Tool) were in a band together once.

If you go by inspiring others to play, albums sales, huge band, etc, then the VH of the 90's was probably either Slash or Zakk, or sad to say, even Kirk Hamster.

You know, I really don't agree with this. Dime was easily the EVH of the 90s, zakk and hammett were past their prime and slash is a great guitarist but he's not on EVH or dimes level. None of those guys really ever played closer to the VH style than dime did either. Like that D-bag Dave mustaine said "When you get to the level that Dime was at, the air is thin up there". In my opinion Tom morello is not that good of a guitarist, yeah he's unique and everything but for me personally the novelty wears off pretty fast when I see a guy with real skills plugged straight into an amp playing his ass off. For the record I agree with Dan that morello did his best work with audioslave but only on their first album...after that it was all downhill.

P.S. If I remember right the band Adam jones and morello were in in high school was called electric sheep. Jones Was the bassist in that band. He said
him and morello went off to college and when they came back morello was a much better guitarist than Jones....I think Adam Jones owns Tom Morello in every way....maybe it's just me

You're looking at it through a guitar players eyes when you say Slash wasn't on Dime's level. And what do you mean by that? That Slash can't alternate pick through a scale like Dime could, or play arpeggio's. Most of the people who are responsible for labeling someone a guitar hero don't know what an arpeggio is. Gun's & Roses were a much bigger band than Pantera, sold millions of albums, etc. Dime wasn't anywhere close to Slash's level popularity wise as a guitar player to music fans. Guitar players aren't really the one's who get to choose who's going to be the biggest guitar hero. And when you jam with Michael Jackson, you're pretty much one of the worlds best known guitar players.

Yeah that is the point of view I'm looking at it through, I'm a guitar player Ithought we were talking guitar skills here....do you think your average person knows what guys are playing the harder licks? Hell no they don't, they just know what's popular and what's being played on the radio. GNR were a much bigger band in the early 90s and Ozzy's always been big, that's doesn't make slash or zakk the best guitarists. The players know what's going on and what it takes to play certain licks, they're the ones that put in the time and hard work learning, not your average Joe. I'd rather see things through a players eyes anyday than through a pair of eyes that don't know what it takes or how difficult the lick actually is.

Both Dime & Morello are in my top 5 fav guitarist but if we are going by album sales..
Rage sold twice as many albums as Pantera..
Slash I will not even get into, Appetite sold more than all of the others combined...

While I wouldn't consider Morello a "guitar god". I think he's done some great f'ing work.


That first Rage album is one of the best albums of that decade....it's easily in the top 10. I think they slid a bit after that and AudioSlave was AWFUL but that doesn't take away from his work on that first album.
