Tony MacAlpine Appreciation Thread!

I've always liked his solo stuff and I got into CAB stuff with Bunny Brunell and Dennis Chambers when it first came out, but right now I'm really into Planet X. I listened to Moonbabies this weekend and Tony just knocks me out!

Any love out there for TMac?

Edge of Insanity and Maximum Security were his first two which came out in the late 80s and are my two favorite of his solo discs. This was when he was being compared to Yngwie (right or wrong). Maximum Security had George Lynch and Jeff Watson guesting.

CAB is very jazzy. I think they have 3 discs. I like the first one the best.

Planet X is my fave of all his stuff. This is when he started playing 7string and is heavy prog with a touch of fusion. It also has Derek Sherinian, Virgil Dinoti and various bass players. Moonbabies and Live From Oz are my faves.

Maximum Security is great. He caught Lynch at the perfect time - just as he was starting to get more technical, but still had feel.... Lynch's solo on Tears of Sahara is one of my favorites and it captures his style perfectly. Like someone else said, you can tell immediately that it's Lynch.

Tony MacAlpine is awesome! He has killer piano chops as well! Haven't listened to his stuff in a while though. Always loved that track Hundreds of Thousands I think it was called. I had never heard him until I saw him play with Derek Sherinian. Awesome show!

Love that track with Lynch and I also loved Tony's playing. It's funny because everytime I heard Tony play, he got his vibrato from the whammy bar instead of his fingers!!

On another note, Lynch sounded like lynch because he used a boss DS-1 pedal for the solo and didn't use Tony's rig. I still have an old article with him.

Oh yeah... those Peavey amps that TOny used sounded exactly like a rockman!! Im not sure why he just didn't use a Rockman at that point!!

Another incredibley gifted player who just didnt do anything for me.. There are definitely a few tracks off of Maximum security that I dig but as whole, Im just not into TM...

Come to think of it, I think I dug some stuff that he did on the project driver album...

I like Tony when I'm in the mood for Varney style shred. Sometimes it can be a bit much but when i need a fix for showers of notes, Tony delivers.

I saw them - probably on that same tour. That's when I decided to try the 7string. And when I first got the idea to have Derek play on a project.

Peavey...Boss...no dif.

I noticed Tony's bar-vibrato too. He could have used his ass and it would still sound better than mine.

Awesome player. Always thought he was one of the most tasteful of the "schooled" shredders. Along with Lynch, they were two of my favorite players from the 80's.
