Pantera is not heavy.

I vote for BLACK SEEDS OF VENGEANCE by Nile.

It's all relative. Like I said, it depends what kind of heavy we're talking about. I've heard dark music that carries some serious weight that doesn't have one distorted guitar or growl in it. The kind of shit that gives you chills just by how it's composed-key changes, dark melodies, etc. Like classical, movie scores, etc. If Pantera isn't heavy, then neither is most of the stuff in this thread.

Anyone can growl over sludgy detuned guitars and blast beats or groove metal shit. For me it is the weight and emotion it carries that makes it impact me as heavy. That's why I think Devin Townsend did some of the "heaviest" shit I've ever heard with Strapping. Sure there are plenty of bands out there that are sonically heavier-faster, louder, lower tunings, more strings, more screemeez and growleez, lol. But his music is fucking insane and sounds like he's on the verge of mental breakdown and is unpredictable. Goes from pretty to scary to "what the hell just happened" in a matter of seconds.

Some of Pantera's songs are just unapologetic and nasty and abrasive. That hits me harder than a lot of the black metal, and core-metal and other modern stuff out there. It feels more real to me and that makes the connection to the listener. It's all relative and it will depend on how the listener reacts. Some guys might think Sabbath is the heaviest band to this day. To me they just sound like a classic rock band. (love em though ;) ) And some people will think Pantera sounds like a classic rock band.  Some think modern metal sounds like N'Sync with heavy guitars and screaming.

Testament - Sewn Shut Eyes
My favorite album from them. I love it when it kicks into the verse at the 31 second mark (check it out).

Unearth - Truth or Consequences
Not a major fan of these guys but always thought this was a cool tune. It gets super heavy at the 1.49 mark. Killer riff!

Heavy Songs With More Intelligible Vocals:

Song Title - Band
The End - Sacred Mother Tongue
Soilwork - Figure Number Five
Stuck Mojo - Open Season
Faith No More - Surprise You're Dead
King's X - Groove Machine

Heavy Songs With a Little less Intelligible Vocals

Song Title - Band
Dragonlord - Wolfhunt (Eric Peterson's band)
Daath - Subterfuge
Killswitch Engage - Unbroken (Personal Fav!)
Killswitch Engage - The Forgotten
Machine Head - Aestetics of Hate

As mentioned, heavy has to do with the WEIGHT of the songs impact and emotion. Not it's speed, anger or growl.

This one takes the cake.

Just one listen equals the heaviness of any other 5 songs.

Pretty much anything off of Annihilation of the wicked from Nile.

I could go on for quite a while here... I can't seem to figure out how to embed videos though

I don't know about heavy, but Strapping Young Lad is certainly abrasive. When I think heavy I think Gojira.

Sing along folks to this one:

LOL

But one of the heaviest back when heavy started:

Chris

Maybe my favorite Sepultura riff of all time

Love the break at 1:50

There are too many for me to list here, and I couldn't possibly even pick 5. However, here is where I'm at this week;
