Just picked up what I think is a 1995 TOV in great shape.

I know they have a small following around these parts so if anyone want to share settings and favorite tube's for it that would be really awesome!!

Thanks for looking!!

I think the TOV is one of my favorite amps ever! I love all the channels and all the extra features like using a rectifier or silicon diodes, using different tubes like EL34,KT66, etc.
The key for me was not changing out the tubes but using celestion G12H30's heritage edition speakers in a 4x12. Holy Hell the amp sound as good as any amp I have ever played and it sounds warm on the high end and not ice picky or fuzzy like a normal DR. The tubes I have are the std mesa tubes 6L6.
Its the one of these amps that frightens me when I crank it because its incredibly loud.
I just keep the tone controls at 12 oclock on the first channel and then on the 2nd channel the mids between 9 and 12 oclock and presence off. Treble and bass at 12 oclock as well depending on the guitar etc. Get the TOV manual from mesa cause it explains how to get the best out of the amp.
Enjoy your masterpiece.

Thanks for the info bro!!!!

To get the best tone on the RED channel I've ALWAYS set the treble really low if not off, and set the mids up high, at least to the 3:00 position. That will give the amp a clearer bolder midrange while also taking all the high gain fizz away. If you havent already, definitely try that setting.

Thanks man I will give this a try in a little while, With the treble that low what are you doing with the presence?

Presence wont have too much effect on the sound unless the amp is loud and the poweramp is contributing a lot to the sound. You will get your highs from the midrange control. At a certain point theres an overlap. You will have a lower, smoother sounding treble using a high mid setting than you would with the treble controls frequencies.

Great amp...you will love it.

I use Winged =C= tubes. I use 6L6 in one and EL34s in the other.

I use 12AT7s, JAN Phillip, in the PI slot and a Tung-Sol 12AX7 in the V1 slot.

I tried everything and love it all.

I have used hi-power and silicone diode while keeping the channels in their normal state (not cloned).

I have also used low-power and the tube rectifiers and cloned orange to the red channel and love that.

I have also mixed and matched the two above settings and that is also a win.

I tend to keep gain at about 12 on the lead channel and only dial in a little tone without dimeing anything...keep the presence low as it can really run away with your tone.

I guess for either channel I don't go paste 12 for any tone shaping.

Remember the tone stack is affected directly by how much you dial in the treble setting, more treble means less mid and bass, less treble means more mid and bass.

Somewhat finicky, but not too awful difficult.

Good luck and dig in.

There is a great difference when you open them up. Cranking them makes them a whole different amp and is recommended if at all possible, but wear ear plugs or be 30 or more feet away from them and not directly in line of sight as they will blow a whole in your head.

Thanks for the treble knob tip!
The TOV seems to be a different animal than my old triple recto....in a good way.

I think I need to roll some new glass in the pre's it has all JJ's in it right now and in the past I have not been to found of them in my old recto.

With my old rec i ran it just as the previous poster recommended, mids real high, treb low, bass low, and i ran the pres pretty high to balance the low treble

I use vintage 6CA7 & Mesa preamp tubes I bought in the 80's..... I bought a lot of them back then & still have about 50 that have not been used yet.

I use a full stack .....slant- H30 top/ V30 bottom ~ straight - greenbacks top / V30 bottom.

Make sure you check out the full gain range of all 4 sounds - clean, blues, red, orange. Clean & blues can do some great crunch & lead sounds. Notice the huge midrange hump in the blues sound..... it is a very different sound than the other sounds. One of my favorites by Mesa.

The manual does a great job & available on the web site.
I tend to use the midrange at 2 o'clock or higher with red & orange most of the time.
I tend to use the presence on the red channel at 9 o'clock or less.
I very much prefer the effects loop completely bypassed.

Thanks for all the tips and info guys they have helped out big time!!!
I think I need to get some better glass in it though, there is some brittleness
in the upper frequency's that I can't seem to dial out but with these tips it's
gotten better.

I've been going back in forth between a Maxon OD808 and a Voodoo labs Sparkle Drive
for boosting and so far I'm really digging the Sparkle Drive with it, what are you guys using?

I do not use a boost very often. I much prefer the amp with nothing between the guitar & amp. Usually all I use is a phase (vibe) & wa. I have a few TS9 type pedals & others. My favorite being Fryette SAS.

When I was using the Tremoverb a lot I was using it in a A/B rig with my Mark IV. Typical setting when used with the Mark IV...... I used the IV Clean, RHY2 for point of breakup / crunch with GEQ on & lead with GEQ off for lead. I used the Red for rhythm & Orange for lead. I also used a THD Hot Plate to control dB's. I find it works great with the Tremoverb. I use different setting depending on my wants & needs at the time. I play a lot of different styles ..... country, rock, blues, funk, metal, etc.
