tried a $11000 guitar yesterday

yup, a Les Paul Joe Walsh 60 reissue.
If I had to pick a reissue, the R0 would be the one. The price is ridiculous but the guitar played like a dream.
I also tried a R8 and the R8 sounded better (by a fraction) and was way more affordable (if you think $4000 is affordable, it's all relative I guess). but the size of the neck was a bit big for me.

Tried it through a Royal Atlantic. The amp sounded great!.
 
The most I have ever paid for a guitar was 3 grand and it's an acoustic I play less then my others .
But had to have a Taylor for the warm sound .
I have always wanted a white les Paul custom just never wanted to shell out the bread !!
I have several Kramers that play better then any les Paul's that I have played and after pickups plecked ect I have maybe 1200.00 or les into each one .
I did have a 70's les Paul studio sounded great .did not like the neck .
I do love the sound of les Paul's and if I had 4 grand floating around I'd go for one !!
 
Played a quarter million, all stock, 59 LP standard last year. Most unique (in a good way) guitar I've ever held. Can't say it's really worth the price but if money was no issue I'd definitely own one.
 
But at what dollar figure does playability max out and other factors kick in to price? Things like exotic materials, shop fees for extremely skilled / in demand custom shops and so on. I figure playability maxes out at about $3000 in my experience. I have played a ton of guitars and rarely have I played anything more expensive than $3000-3500 or so that plays / sounds better.
 
i bought an 11000 dollar guitar once. 50th anni paul. #32 of 50.
 
don't get me wrong, the guitar is certainly worth the price :)
If I had the money, I would go for it.
I asked about a regular R0 and the price figure I got was $5500.
It sure is a lot of money but man, a great playing LP is just a dream to play.
 
I can understand it but I'd never do it, even regular historics as far as new. The collectors collections will appreciate so its like an investment, kind of like art is.

I have 2 Historics, an R7 Gold Top and a B7 3PU 57 Black Beauty Custom both of which I bought used for what the 2 owners lost combined the second they took them out of the store lol. Both were bought used < $2500
 
I live in LA, and frequent the usual hotspots for high-end instruments. I will say that I have not found a consistent and direct correlation between the price of an instrument and its tone and playability. The Fender Blacktop Strat that I recently picked-up (used / like new) for $300 makes me feel like fool (yet again) for paying $1,200 for my last Fender. That being said, I have found that regarding amplifiers: You usually have to pay up for premium tone. Just my thoughts.
 
I was talking playability man. Asking the masses where playability value maxes out dollar wise. I played a $9000+ guitar and it didn't sound or feel any better than my PRS or J-Custom.
 
the price of rare and collectable guitars doesn't make much sense to folks here and leads to the same result every time. if guitars are what you are passionate about and have some knowledge of, and can afford it, it can be a satisfying venture. it's not about whether a 5 digit price tag plays the same as the average production model guitar.
 
Glad to hear the guitar sounded and played nice. I will never forget trying out a $40k upright piano (expensive for an upright) that sounded and played sub par. The sales person admitted that it needed a setup.
 
I love guitars, but I don't think I could ever spend that much on one. My personal limit is around $3,500, and even then I try to swing a deal. There are so many great players around for much less too.
 
Idk I watch Mark Day rip it up on a stock Mexican Strat & I wonder what's the point?
At some level it's just a museum piece

The point only works if you're prime interest is in the business of flipping guitars for profit
And then in that scenario I would have to imagine there are better business ventures
 
I play my guitars. They get knocked over at gig's, beer on them, knocked into things.

I understand collecting, but for me guitars are tools to achieve a result.
 
I get it. The Gibson CS put a lot into these pieces, and it is all handmade. They hand cut the cavities for the wires and even hand cut the binding centers. It's totally only school, and takes a lot of skill, which I have huge respect for. The more exacting the ageing process, the longer it takes, the more it costs. These guys pay no heed to how the main factory over the road does things.
What I don't understand so well is where the money to buy them comes from.
Anyone here move in social circles where they drop $11k on anything without 4 wheels?
 
There are some who have a more expensive guitar than car. Most who drop 11k on a guitar are not professional musicians, but are most people who own fine art; artists? It it makes you happy, have at it.

I will probably get a used Les Paul player eventually, and put some Tho Bak pickups in there and be done.
Even a cheap guitar with good pickups and a great amp will sound killer. To me, tone and playability are king.

If you want to buy a true collector guitar,amp or even Art, the best deal would be to wait till the next economic downturn. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but vintage gear prices on EBAY took a huge dive in the aftermath. It is upply and demand. Before someone loses their house, luxury items go first. So the market was flooded with Guitars, Amps, and Art, with less people to buy. Same goes for houses. Jeez I sound like a vulture saying this, but it's true. I saw amps that were selling for 6 to 8k selling for 2 to 3k

I bet many on this forum have more in their gear than they do in their cars. I know I do. For me I would rather have 10 guitars and basses than 1 $11k guitar. As you mentioned as long as the guitar plays well, just through in some good pickups through a nice amp and you are golden.

If someone wants to buy the $11k or more guitar, more power to them.
