There are some who have a more expensive guitar than car. Most who drop 11k on a guitar are not professional musicians, but are most people who own fine art; artists? It it makes you happy, have at it.

I will probably get a used Les Paul player eventually, and put some Tho Bak pickups in there and be done.
Even a cheap guitar with good pickups and a great amp will sound killer. To me, tone and playability are king.

If you want to buy a true collector guitar, amp or even Art, the best deal would be to wait till the next economic downturn. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but vintage gear prices on EBAY took a huge dive in the aftermath. It is upply and demand. Before someone loses their house, luxury items go first. So the market was flooded with Guitars, Amps, and Art, with less people to buy. Same goes for houses. Jeez I sound like a vulture saying this, but it's true. I saw amps that were selling for 6 to 8k selling for 2 to 3k

I bet many on this forum have more in their gear than they do in their cars. I know I do. For me I would rather have 10 guitars and basses than 1 $11k guitar. As you mentioned as long as the guitar plays well, just through in some good pickups through a nice amp and you are golden.

If someone wants to buy the $11k or more guitar, more power to them.
I personally have more invested in my cars than guitars and gear but thats just me, im sure theres alot of guys that would rather invest in gear than a car. You can do the same with cheaper cars and cheaper guitars but it just comes down to what you like owning and how much you wanna invest and justify.
You can get some great deals on used stuff right now. More value for your money.

I see alot of people buying guitars over 10k on the les paul forums but not so much on most other forums. Really depends on the person and their job or age. Everybody is different.
I dont advise people to spend most of their savings on cars and guitars or if you cant pay your bills.
Too many times i have seen dudes spend over half their savings on a guitar and then have to sell it because work became slow or lost their job and have a family to provide for.

If somebody only has 10k in the bank and has 8k of gear then theres a problem.
But if somebody has a million or two in bank then 10k isnt gonna be a problem.

so in the end of the day, I got a better deal than him.
The point only works if you're prime interest is in the business of flipping guitars for profit
And then in that scenario I would have to imagine there are better business ventures

The point is, have you kept every gear that you bought?
If you don't, you flipped it, right? Was it your prime interest?
So you want to do the best deal, right?
So I am telling I made a better deal buying my Perry Aged new(now the used one cost the same) than a guy which bought a Fender Mexican new.

BTW I have a better business venture than buy and sell gear, my job. ;)
Perryburst is great, i also have a aged perry and its my favorite guitar.
It will hold its value and appreciate over time like many other les paul sig models that are aged by murphy and built in the custom shop. You are right that a used one is the same price or cost more than a new one did.

Theres only a small handful of guitars that will do this.

I get it. The Gibson CS put a lot into these pieces, and it is all handmade. They hand cut the cavities for the wires and even hand cut the binding centers. It's totally only school, and takes a lot of skill, which I have huge respect for. The more exacting the ageing process, the longer it takes, the more it costs. These guys pay no heed to how the main factory over the road does things.
What I don't understand so well is where the money to buy them comes from.
Anyone here move in social circles where they drop $11k on anything without 4 wheels?
Lotsa guys here can and do drop that kinda coin on guitars… so you move in one of those social circles...

I recommend you check out OX4 pickups before you spend even more for ThoBak's… The OX4 pickups are incredible…

Yes, I liked the Perry Aged so much so I bought a second one, used, for the same price that I payed in my new one. So the first owner bought it, used and sold and didn't lost any coin. If he had bought a Mexican Fender new, he would lost money, a few coins but lost.
Just check the Pearly Gates, Jimmy Page One, Bloomfield prices for sale in Ebay and the Perry too.
I have a pearly vos, aged slash, and rossington and all of them are worth more than i paid.
I had a jimmy page #2 vos and made 2k on it and im really sorry i sold it because they are really hard to find and will cost me more than i sold it for to replace it.

(Typo on original - 'old-school').

I'm honored you think so.
I have a lot invested in guitars, although not that much in any one piece.
Roll on the millions...

If you recommend them, then they must be great. I'll check them out.

Got an LP Standard that the stars must have lined up that day. Amazing tone and plays like butter. I've played more expensive LP's but this one got the mojo!

had to have a Taylor for the warm sound
You're likely the first person to ever describe a Taylor as warm...kinda like calling a porcupine cuddley.
They make nice guitars that play phenominally well, but warm they are not when played acoustically.

Really???? How can you support such a generalized comment? Btw....I'm a contradiction to this claim.

I still can't figure out why anybody give's a rat's ass what somebody else pays for gear??

Only thing that matters is if the owner is happy with their purchase, whether it $100, $1000 or $10,000+ dollar item.

I remember being young, 19-20 in college and seeing folks with killer expensive stuff and never questioned them other than wondering what they did for a living and realizing I had better start working my ass off soon in something that pays the bills if I want that stuff. It didn't take me long to realize that being a poor musician for a living wasn't gonna get me out of my parents house.

This pretty much sums up my generalization. Of course there are exceptions ( no offense intended in any way), but unless you have a 2nd job, great finacial dicipline, or some other sweet financial situation (like free gear or benefactors), it's a shame how little (most) make. Even some of the guitar players who you think have a sweet high profile gigs, make surpisingly less than what they deserve. It's a shame, but hey... they do what they love. I wish I could still too, but family comes first.

I didn't mean to come off flippant with my comment. My family does taxes for a lot of people in the movies, tv, and pro musicians. I'm just a rusty has been former pro musician, and haven't giged in many years. but I've also built many amps for pros and just working stiffs over the last decade.

IME most people who bought the high dollar stuff were professionals... As in Doctors, Lawyers, and some guys with good jobs and/or a credit cards. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Other than they are who are driving up the prices, which for a builder is a good thing.
