Season 1 was the buildup...background stuff, his take on the times, etc....Season 2 is the instructional stuff. If I'm not mistaken, Episode 1 of Season 2 ("Get Down For the Upstroke") is available for free his YouTube channel. This is where he starts to break down Yngwie's technique. There are also a multitude of videos on his YouTube channel from the first "Talking The Code" live webinar. (including the whole thing in one hour and half shot) ..pretty much a recap of Episode 1, Q&A from participants, a brief look at the concepts as it applies to other player's techniques (who use different variation of what Yngwie uses) etc.
The "Masters in Mechanics" seminars are detailed looks at the concepts in the "Cracking The Code" series, each one corresponding to an episode in the series...online webcam chat type of a thing with Q&A, and packs of tab, audio, and video. They are not necessary, just an add-on.

Ok cool, I will check that out then.

I actually started to watch that and within 5 seconds remembered Season 1 and was like F this I learned nothing   .

I will go back and watch and thanks for posting.

This guy truly has cracked the code to high speed picking. His level of attention to detail in figuring this all out and presenting it in an entertaining manner is killer!

It's funny, I've had lessons from several very good players, but not one of them ever tried to show me HOW they could pick so fast and why it worked. This is a totally different kind of "lesson"...

Steve

I'm old enough to have studied those guys to the bone, all of their instructional vids and all of that stuff...not one of them talks about what Troy is breaking down. Signed up for some of his "Masters in Mechanics" seminars, and you get the super-slow motion footage of him demonstrating these concepts, and it becomes apparent what is really going on.

Yeah...thinking about buying Season 2. Good stuff.
I bought it and you get Season I free as well. I just got an update with tab and super slo mo of this stuff and it is really helpful in understanding the mechanics of how Yngwie picks stuff (he'll feature other players in upcoming episodes with different techniques as well). I would have never worked this hard to figure it all out and I think if you don't just naturally figure it out, at least with what Troy does, you could practice it and get really good at it. It was interesting to hear Troy say that the guitar hero guys mostly don't really know what they are doing, they just figured a way that worked naturally. What Troy does helps the rest of us, I think. You still need to practice your ass off, but at least you are practicing a correct technique with musical passages that will be useful once mastered.

If I can just get my left hand fixed, I'm going to really dig in and woodshed this stuff and see where it leads... Picking has always been my achilles heal. Anything fast I used to be able to do was 90% legato and some tapping... It's very limiting...

Steve

From the looks of it, yeah season 1 was a background/buildup, looking at season 2's episodes seems different.
But, on his website, there is a price for season 1 episodes/$5 each. Don't know if that included more than what isaw, like tab examples or other stuff, but I woulda been let down spending money on season 1 if there wasn't more included.

That said....I believe he is onto something, and the time spent on production of those vids I'm sure is huge. They are cool.

This may be what I am missing then.

A while back I watched almost the entire first season. While I agree this was very entertaining and you can tell he knows his stuff. I just could not find the lesson in these videos.

I feel that I learned nothing and would have been disappointed buying this and not learning a damn thing besides a history lesson.

Am I watching these wrong? Or do I need to do the seminars to learn how he is doing certain runs?
Season 2 is where things get serious with specific tab, however, he explains downward pick slanting, "chunking" and how to make sure all string changes are on an upstroke in Season I, which I found helpful in itself without specific examples - I mean, I could make up my own really and it gave me an idea of how to attack different passages myself. Specific examples in Season 2 will help you...

I got Season II for $20 and that allowed me to download everything from Season I free. I get updates when new Season II stuff is available. Honestly, what I've learned from him up to know I could practice for a year to get right... Invaluable for $20 IMO...

Steve

The important part to me is I've never even heard of pick slanting before...nobody has ever mentioned it. Not to be confused with pick angling, btw. Simply adding that in in a one-way pick slanting paradigm like Yngwie's has made a huge difference is my playing. "Inside the Volcano" is the next episode, and I've already attended the "Masters In Mechanics" seminar for that one (they look ahead in the series). He'll be laying out the rest of Yngwie's "rules"...he does things in very specific way so that that he can maintain his downward pick slanting technique. The bottom line is that nothing of the usual stuff you hear about shredding (small motions, metronome work, etc.) has made such a huge impact on my picking technique, and believe me, it was not for lack of trying.

Just when you thought to 80's were really over, here comes Troy Grady and his flying fingers... :jerkit:

I think what he is doing is really cool! And he rips on guitar!
What creeped me out, was the clip where he's standing in what was or is his bedroom... Hair metal band posters galore, and a greying 40 something guy wearing a Members Only jacket, rocking-out on 80's speed-licks. :scared:

They're supposed to be flashback scenes. A lot of his videos are actually snippets from longer videos that he opens to his members/students sections. Also, they're tongue in cheek.

He is a super nice guy. Heading to his site to check out the updates. Haven't talked to him in a while.

Huh... I would have sworn it was $20 when I paid for it, but it is still well worth $30 IMO...

Steve

Haha...thanks Steve! Was just wondering if I was missing something.
