Tube amp or digital?

for the price over here i'd definitely give the kemper a go, on the used market you're looking at around 1100 euros for one, the axe fx 2 is closer to the 2k mark, the kemper is easier to dial in imo as you're going off the quality of a base profile, the axe fx is a great unit but if you're a compulsive tweaker like me you'll tend to get lost in the huge amounts of settings/bias/voltage/IC chip/eq curve/ etc etc settings

i've got some 2 tube amps in my appartment (an 83 jcm800 and a h&k statesman) with a 2x12 and an attenuator, i pretty much never use it, i really love it when i plug in to those rigs, sound/feel is great but the noise level concerns for the neighbours means can't really enjoy it

had the kemper now since 6-7months, use it with a pair of small studio monitors, bought a few and selected down my favourite profiles, switch between 3-4 kind of tones and it's brilliant, 'cranked' tube amp tone and feel at low volumes, there are some great profiles out there, i bought a few off the amp factory , and i'm very curious to try the mbritt profiles,

If you already have a tube amp, go the two notes route. I own one and it's excellent.

This Kemper clip will surely get the Rig-Talk stamp of approval.

Those sound pretty impressive. This is coming from a tube amp purist.

it sounds really good. When i have the cash ill drive down to a shop to check out the torpedo, kemper and if posible the axe-fx. In the mean while i have enought time to do my research.

Thanks a lot guys.

I would for sure try the Axe fx II with the latest firmware...

I think you'll be very surprised!

Also with something like the Axe Fx you have many amps to play with instead of just one or two....

Thanks Reza,

Well at the end of the day i love my amp. I mainly use 1 clean channel, 1 rythem channel and 1 lead channel.
The two notes would make my Herbert wife and neighbour friendly but also would make recording easy.

If i would go torpedo my setup would look like:
torpedo to headphones for early mornings
torpedo to studio monitor for during the day (when wife is at home)
Amp to cab....when im alone ;)
torpedo to mac for recording

i want one great amp, one great clean, OD and distortion sound.

I have learned versatility is just an illusion since i sound the same thru many amps.

Tubes for me.

As a strictly tube amp guy, I've heard some really impressive clips from the Axe/Kemper/plug in stuff, but when I recorded some solos for a friends solo project, I thought the feel was not even close. The sound was great, like the real thing, but it would mess with my head, because it was a saggy tone (brown sound), but really quick attack.

Two notes. But it from guitar center. You can return it within 30 days if you don't like it. Easy.

That being said, I have multiple tube amps and an axe 2, once I got in the two notes game, I only use the axe fx 2 for bass. And even then it's probably not necessary because of the bass capabilities and built in powers modeling in the two notes.

But I don't use any of the power amp modeling In the two notes.

I just plug my Diezel VH4 into it , bring up a cab. Set the levels and record.

It's amazong. I am never micing anything amp/guitar/cab ever again.

This!!!

so many guys say....I want a simple setup. Well.....I don't see it being overly difficult to bring 1 head and a Two-Notes Live or studio to the gig. Really....I did it with my JVM410HJS and it was perfect and super easy to setup and I used the monitors they had on stage and the tone was glorious! If I need to put a small pedalboard in for some effects, then I can do that with ease as well. The biggest issue is the cab for most.

I know that everyone says about reliability of tubes, etc. However, I had a Kemper that failed on my 4 times last summer during my gigs to which I returned it for a refund.
What did I end up running? A borrowed Fender deluxe combo with a Bogner pedal running into it.

You really can't speak about reliability these days and I get miffed when people start talking about how reliable the digital stuff is. Anything and everything can go poof at anytime for whatever reason. In my case, I've had greater reliability with my tube amps then I have had with my digital gear. Maybe that is just my luck, maybe it is not. I don't know.

Either way, if you have an amp you love, I'd keep it. I've made that mistake too many times only to be disappointed.
Not this time.

Thats the reason i got rid of alot of gear. Dont get me wrong i love having alot of things or getting new stuff but after a while you know what you want and need. Having gas is a epidemic and anyone can get it ;)

To PBgas and petejt: I never said i would sell the amp

BTW: i had tubes fail on me for 2 years in a row, didnt know much about tubes back then. I had the Engl SE, soldano decatone and the herbert new back then. I blamed the Herbert at first because the other amps had no tube issues but after some help from P. Stapfer and tubes i got from him my Herbert has been running them 4 years now. (that reminds me i have to check the bias again)

Also the only regret i have from selling gear is that i dont know where the money whent

eco70777: i understand, for me versatility would mean a different guitar or pickups

Getting back to axe-fx and kemper: If i didnt have any tube amp history and how im not in a band, so basicly playing at home and just recording i would go for the kemper or axe-fx in a heartbeat.

Stupid question but.................can the 2 Notes Live be used like an attenuator between an amp and cab like the THD Hotplates? Or is it just for silent recording? Do they make another box that can do that?

The one you want for that piece is called the Two-Notes Torpedo Reload which is in fact an attenuator. Lots of great reviews on it!

"recorded directly from kemper"

using IR's or a miked cab - anyone know ??

when using the torpedo live without the amp as input, what do most use as a pre-amp for that option? Some type of pre-amp pedal or modeler device?
