I'm not a big fan of rappers getting in before Priest, Maiden, Motley Crue, etc., etc. who were actual rock and roll and sold billions of albums, played stadiums in nearly every country, and have songs all over the radio, video, etc.
With that said, a little side story about Tupac. Back in the mid 90s, I was stationed in Hawaii and went to dinner at the Hard Rock Café. Tupac, which nobody noticed at the time, actually bumped into me and made me fall forward a bit. When I turned around to go "what the hell?", I noticed the bandana and nose ring, etc. and was like "that's Tupac!".
I went in and quietly asked if that was him and the staff said "yes, but he is eating and wants to be left alone so he can relax". So I went and waited by his rental car. When they came out, the cops held everyone back near the restaurant. I was by his car, alone and he literally walked right up to me with nobody else around. I said hi and asked for his autograph and he was super cool. Then the cops let everyone else go and he signed all types of stuff, took pics, etc.
The funny thing was that I was wearing some type of rock shirt like Ratt or Bulletboys or something so he probably thought I was a goon.

The sad thing was within a few months he had been shot dead. Felt weird as I had just met him. He was definitely a really talented artist.
