Hi everyone, I already have a VH4s, a Herbert and a Savage. I wasn't thinking of buying any more amps at all. The only amp I was curious was the evh 5150iii but I thought yeah yeah, someday in the future, since they are easy to find. Then BAM!! Couple of days ago I saw this ad on mark IV, and I got very curious. And apart from mark v's these are very rare where I live. Back in the day I tried the mark v in a shop but had no idea how to get a good sound out of it so I ignored it after that one attempt. Now, after reading some reviews I couldn't help myself, and I was hit with major GAS and I pulled the trigger. I will have it tomorrow. Was this a wise move I don't know. Should I have gone for EVH, I don't know. All I know is my inner metallica fan boy took over.

Yes with some advice:

Keep the bass knobs low
Keep the Masters up
Don't expect a "Plexi" out of Ch2
Live with a setting for a while before you discount it as useless..Switches on back make some big feel differences

TAKE YOUR TIME this is not a plug in and get a great tone amp

Use V30's in closed back cabs

Otherwise ROCK ON!

Yeah, I think it was a good move, especially if they're hard to find in your area.

Plenty of tutorials on how to set up the IV out there, so you should have no issues dialing in a sound you dig.

Congrats!

Thanks a lot everyone for the advice, I'll definitely try.

I've always had an itch to try one as well, but just never pulled the trigger. Interested to hear how it turns out.

Had both the 50 and 100 watt EVH 5150iii's, got rid of both and the FB100 stayed. The blue channel was nice but the FB100 voicing won it for me. Too much of that upper mids "Kerang" sound going on, if you know what I mean. Hated the red channel on both EVH's.

Loving the Herbert and the Savage 120 so far! I can see why you said you'll probably never get rid of em! The Savage 120 is the first and only high gainer I've ever played that doesn't NEED a boost to tighten things up. Ch 4 sounds TIGHT! I still clean boost it though

Thank you guys. Tried it a little and I love it. Beautiful sparkling cleans and very characteristic distortion tones. It can really nail the puppets, justice, black tones which I initially wanted. Overall, the amp sounds awesome and so much fun to play. The tones are very different compared to my other amps.

Yes, indeed, herbert and savage are beasts!!

1meanplexi: the settings you suggested are killer! Amazing tones!! Thanks. \m/

Great amp. I used one for several years. To me, they have the authentic Mesa tones. It was the only channel switching amp I have ever liked. Never tried the Mark V.

I'm wondering:

1) is there any way to find out the year of my amp, as well as if it s a IVa or IVb?

2) is it okay to switch between pentode/triode mode while the amp is on?

1) The fastest way is to check the effects loop. There's a difference between the the A and B versions. Check pics and compare.

2) Pretty sure it's safe.

Hope this helps. Killer amp!

My pleasure. I can tell you that I have spent HOURS all at once tweaking this amp. I would dial in a tone then introduce the EQ for final shaping. Watch that 750HZ slider.

Nope--you should have bought Reza's IIC++

If I lived in the US, I would have bought one looong ago.

Go to "The Boogie Board" for all your questions. All Boogie, all the time, there is even a whole section on identifying Mark IV's.

Great amp. I would take the Mark IV over the EVH. I have owned both.
