Well I have a to make a choice on which transformers to use on my SLO build I'm doing. I'm making a turret board one. Pretty fun so far but still waiting on some parts.
I've e-mailed Mercury they said,
"MP100-67 power
MMO-100M output
MAR100-C choke

MP100-67 power has a little higher B+ voltage and will give you the headroom and gain you requested.

The MMO-100M output is designed for use in the high gain amp with four 6L6/5881/6550/KT88 type tubes (it can also be used with four EL34 type tubes). This OT has 4-8-16 ohm secondary taps.

The MAR100-C choke is the matching choke for the PT and OT suggested above."

I like the fact that soldano has used these in there lower end amps. Having said that I don't know if I like the sound of there OT's I've heard.
O'netic's. http://www.c3amps.com/Onetics%20Transformers.htm
Or Heyboer. Which have a hi-fi style of OT, and power tranny that will fit this amp.
Prices are all about the same.
What do you think?
I also tired to use what is found in these amps, like Mallory PVC caps with Phillips MKT's, ceramic and metal film resistors. Here is a mock up, nothing solder yet.

Not sure if I should go with a can style of filter cap ?

I went with O'nectics iron. Here are some more pics after drilling the chassis and wiring some more. First amp build so go easy on me.

i'd probably go for Heyboer.

whatever the Titan guy goes by on here posted a link to clips of some of the deferent trannies in what i beleave was an SLO type circuit?

looking good so far! i fixing to go work on my Metro awhile.

Sweet! Next amp I want to do is a 800 style. Which one are you doing?

I'll look for the link. Thanks!

i have schematics with specific voltages.. i can PM you the winding voltages off of the PT to better help you if you want?

i personally would use a dagnall clone OT and a mercury magnetics PT and choke.

at least thats what i would do if i were building one. BTW nice choice on the spragues - awsome poly caps

and the build looks extremely clean.. im guessing this is far from your first   ;)

That would be great dude!
I will consider that as well. There are so many ways you could go about this makes the deciding factor tough.
Honestly only dicked around with small stuff, like wiring guitars and modded my amp thanks to Mike Fortin. Never built one. But if you just take on one part at a time I find it makes it a little easier for me.
Basically trying to build this thing with the best stuff with in reason. If I could just find some can radial mount 200 uf 300v+ capacitors I would be really happy. The Mallory ones the factory one uses are fuckin huge and tough to mount.

pm'ed :)

i have a mercury mag OT in my 5150 with their choke. IMHO it colours well with the tone of the amplifier and sounds great. but it took a good 8 months for it to wear in and sound that way. was very harsh almost distasteful, and really hard to play when i first installed it. and with with constant band practices and practice-building playing it still took a good 8 months. but now that it is worn in it sounds great and i wouldnt trade it for the world with this amplifier =]

but imho i still prefer dagnalls. they add an open-ness that records excellent. i think david bray has a marshall clone he modded with one installed you can check out. compare it to the others he has modded and you will see what im talking about.

now granted the mods themselves dont touch fortin's work or camerons, but the transformer is what im talking about lol

i'm doing a 12series plexi, and it's kicking my ass!

this kit is pretty new and not much for instructions yet, i'm just going off pictures from guys that have got them built now.

i'll get it eventually, but sure i'll make a few mistakes along the way.

i got the sockets, trannies, and choke mounted, and allmost done with the heater wires

i'm not very proud of my wiring! i don't really have the temperament for working on small stuff! :scared:

It kind of depends on what you're after, do you want to get as close to a slo as possible or are you wanting to put your own spin on it? The dudes over at the sloclone board seem to find the o'netics iron to be tried and true. I believe Olaf has posted that he likes the new sensor marshall 100w ot in slo style builds quite a bit, a good friend of mine has had very good luck with that output iron as well, I've heard that it is made by pacific but I can not confirm or deny. Heyboer makes great stuff, if you had the proper data you could actually have them custom wind you something for a price that would surely beat mercury and others but I'm sure the overhead is alot lower in Michigan vs California. Nice choice of caps btw, Mallory pvc's are fantastic, looks like you've got some tc series filters as well, they are hard to beat but pricey. Bottom line, I would go with the o'netics if I wanted to get as close as possible. A partridge clone ot would be a good choice also, they're available from heyboer as well as mercury.

I remember from reading Olaf say he really likes the New Sensor stuff when comparing to the Hammond stuff.
I would have to agree with you on the Onetics stuff. Plus C3 that is offering them has all the voltages correct for the build. So I'm sure there as close as you can get which really makes want to get them as I'm trying to get as close as possible.
Thanks!

I get most of my Iron from Heyboer, and they will custom wind you anything you want for about the same or even less than you could buy off the shelf. Plus Heyboer makes tons of Trannies for tthe Boutique guys.

I had custom Heyboer on my SLO Clone and everyone love loves it.

Did you get there power transformer as well and did it have the correct voltages and taps?

If you want to get close to a SLO, go Onetics Hi-Fi Transformers.

I contacted DeYoung a while back wanting power/output transformers for a Fender Prosonic project I was contemplating. They said their stuff was proprietary to Soldano and they would not sell to me. They said Bud Purvine/Onetics was as close as I would get.

Looks great so far first build or not. Good choice on the iron as well. ;)

I've used the PTP board layout a couple of times and here's what I don't like:
the grounding bus can cause hum, it is much better to ground the seperate stages at their cathodes and run seperately a wire to the star, also the bus-pot-grounding, which includes the presence/NFB isn't optimal and should also follow what I've said before.
Additionally the SLO profits a lot from DC heating at least V1 and V2 and reducing the original 68k input screen R down to "some" kOhm (say 4k7 or whatever) to avoid the typical hiss when idle.

Also make sure that all jacks (esp. the input) are insulated from the chassis, ground the speaker-outs and the OT at the tubes and run a wire from there to the star (ground).

Thanks for the help on the loop and on the turret board.

I have that ground buss running from the star ground to the tubes and on to the ohm selector (OT ground) out to the output jacks. I insulated all the jacks.
