Van Halen mixing new album

I dont want to hear any freakin wah on this either. The 2004 and 2007 wah and sustainer-fest was too much too handle. I just can't associate a wah with Eddie, sorry. Only on one part in Poundcake...and that was tasteful wah

I know he was a drunken mess, but all of 07 shows sounded like he forgot to turn off the wah (and switch to the bridge pup on alot of songs)

keeping my fingers crossed this time around

What can possible go wrong???
Besides that, the project includes a man who can no longer sing and a man who can no longer play guitar...

I don't get this either. DLR was never a singer. He was a FRONTMAN. The greatest ever. Even during their prime he barely sang in concert and was known to forget most of the words, but it never truly mattered because he had away of commanding the crowd with his charisma. He was the perfect match for EVH. It didn't matter if EVH messed some shit up or, their off the cuff style is what was awesome live and their tension fueled it. DLR is actually a better singer now than he was then.
What's not to get. He used to be able to sing and now his voice is shot. Whether you thought he was a crappy singer early on or not, he could hit notes with some authority on record (regardless of whether they recorded him one word at a time like Ed says or not). He can no longer pull off singing on an album. All you have to do is listen to how weak his voice was (and how bad he was struggling to hit notes) on the two "Best of..." tunes - and that was 15 YEARS ago. Man can no longer sing like he could on the first few albums and tours. Cannot hit the notes - get it now? I loved Dave on the VHII and WACF tours, but after that his voice was downhill and he stopped singing. This got fucking annoying, no matter how much he danced around and the "I forgot the fuckin' words nonsense at every show got OLD...

Steve

Ok, we get it; you don't like or won't like any new Van Halen and DLR can't sing. Cool. I went to 2 of the DLR reunion shows including the opening night in Charlotte and beside the hiccups here and there they were great shows. The fact that Dave was even up there after all of these years made it worth the price of admission. I think you just have to accept the fact that it's not going to sound like old Van Halen and they probably won't recapture the majic of those days. Oh yea; and they are getting OLD. Oh yea; and Mike Anthony is gone - that is the real tragedy here!! Sucky or not, I will buy the new record and will be on the front row if they don't fall apart before reaching ATL

Look, if it's good I'll admit I was wrong, but it won't be...

I have no axe to grind - EVH was my hero, but those days are long gone... The original VH is still my favorite hard rock band of all time. And I thought Dave was a really good singer back in the day who complimented the sound of the band perfectly... It's over though, mainly due to drug and alcohol abuse...

On topic, I'm a huge EVH fan and I became one in 1984. So I was looking forward to the new stuff and never listened to the old stuff until later because I was 14 and didn't know any better but it gave me the ability to listen to Van Halen as a whole without bias. I dig just about every album on some level. Some more than others, sure, but I respect the whole output. Even III has its merits. In fact, in my humble opinion, the entire output of the Hagar era is still better than anything on the radio right now.

So what's my point? I'm looking forward to the new stuff. I don't think it's going to have any impact on modern music. It's not going to blast it's way to the top of the charts and it's not going to change the world, but it could be good. It could very definitely be good.

Yup...Huge VH fan.
Since I had the 1st Vinyl LP back in 78.
They had the ups and downs....and I look forward to anything from them with high hopes.
The Glass is half FULL for me. ;)

Isn't it funny that Sammy was technically a million times the better singer than Roth. But I'd still rather Roth anyday, but i couldn't stand how processed Eddie's tone got and their tunes were so painfully commercial as well with Sammy. I actually did think 5150 had it's moments but after 0U812 VH was done for me.

I stand corrected. I have not heard the tapes. I have heard first hand from the guys making the record that it is really good, that EVH's playing was back and DLR was singing his ass off.

Not sure it matters. It kind of seems some are more eager to write them off than eager for new VH music.

As long as Eddie has taken a step away from his porn stint and "Catherine", I'll probably enjoy it. There's some great guitar on all VH records and that's really the only reason I listen to VH.

I guess you haven't actually listened to an Alanis Morissette disc then? They tend to be surprising good. As big of a VH fan as I am, they should be so luck as to put out something as good in quality as one of hers (but in their style, ) regardless of commercial success.

Style difference, you answered your own question.

I think Madonna's Rain is a masterpiece but would not have those guys trying to capture vintage VH.

Eatem and Smile was Roth's last good vocal performance imo.

I think if anyone is expecting vintage Van Halen to be recorded, they are setting themselves up for a huge let down.
