Vernon Reid Rig Rundown

Wow what a mess. If one of the iPad or laptops go into standby mode he is kinda screwed. What a birds nest of wires.

When I was 18-20 many many years ago I had a Roland GR1 synth that has 6 out puts and I wanted to run each string to an output to 3 amps (6 outputs l/r) to 6 speakers set around the room so it sounded like the sound had movement and direction. Never could afford it. So I kinda understand but…...

I made it to the 6min mark. What a load of shite!

HA couldnt make it past 3 minutes, what a mess. I saw them on a club date waaaaay back when and he had 4 racks full of stuff and that huge V shaped pedal board....At least there was some tone to his rig back then ( all Boogie Triaxis )...

I was actually agreeing with you and telling you wont get far with the majority here. That said if you dont like me or my posts there is an ignore option.

Listen to it. This is a great disc. They are a great band. Vernon's live tone still sucks. I've seen him twice now and he was on both times, but his tone sucked. He used Crate amps and the rest of his rig was like this shit. Doug plays like a motherfucker, but he is the Godfather of every badass bass riff you have ever heard. He gets a great tone, but now he does delve a bit too much into the effects to play with Venon, but whatever.

Pretty much sums up how I feel about most of your posts.

I could not even finish it, Sounded like crap, way to complicated and who cares

Yeah, it's cool that you can do all that, but I'm not sure I'd ever want to.

Actually, his wiring is the most concerning thing of the whole setup. It's like he used whatever cables he had lying around his place to put it together. I have to believe he has reliability issues with that.

I actually enjoyed that a ton. While I don't personally relish the idea of playing into something with that level of complexity, I dig the fact that those two can get away with it. The bass side of things was actually more interesting to me. I think both of those guys are incredible though.

only thing i kept thinking is 'why'
and also how is one supposed to be able to play well when you are managing so much nonsense?

seems like a pile of gear excuse to hide behind, instead of being a real player. i swear this kind of thing motivates me to unload all my gear and invest in a nice acoustic

never understood his tone or playing

Finally watched it; his rig is not that complicated, he's just running 3-4 different ideas at the same time.
Nothing wrong with exploring technology and sound ideas IMO; also curious to hear how it's implemented live. Some of the stuff he's doing would be easier to do with a keyboard player

Wouldn't an Axe-2 cover all of what he's trying to do with just 1 box and not that mess?

exactly what i was thinking!

Did a fill in gig as his tech, when my bud Paul was their bass tech. Got to play the prototype Parker Dragonfly, as well as 1st production one.

Nice laid back dude, but the rig was an on-the-fly, kinda just plug things in, change them all through sound check... it was nuts. 2 amps, and 2 axe-fx, plus ALLL kinds of toys, iPad, etc. It was a relatively easy gig, but I was having nightmares wondering how I was going to troubleshoot if any signal loss occurred.   :scared: :aww:

Vernon is a good dude and a tinkerer/explorer when it colmes to tones. But i agree - time spent on the AXE Fx would simplify that whole rig immensely. The whole band was cool and laid back, and it was a great show FWIW.

Wow!!! Complex rigs are cool, don't get me wrong, but this rig is just WAAAYYY over the top. I would think that you could accomplish the same type of effects with MUCH less gear. Good for him though experimenting and coming up with something unique.

The troubleshooting would worry me the most.

I don't understand how you can tour like that... But it looks like he is doing it, so fair play to him.

Can you imagine bringing that to a jam night?!
