Vertical 2x12s

Anyone try a few different ones? I’m looking at grabbing something. I love my 4x12s but gigging with one is getting harder for me with back injuries etc.

I want to get something from one of the big box stores to take advantage of the financing deals this month. So I’m looking at Soldano, Mesa, ENGL and even the Badcat 3x12 which is smaller and lighter than a 4x12 , it’s about the same size as most of the vertical 2x12s surprisingly. I might even swap neo creamback speakers in to the cab I get to further cut on weight.

Anyways just wondering which one might sound and project the best for live use.

Also if you're worried about back issues consider loading it with Creamback Neos which are almost half way between a Creamback 65 and Greenback tonally. Super light and great speakers.

Don’t overlook the Friedman vertical 2x12. I have one and prefer it to the Mesa and Marshall that I had.

i dont know about any new ones but my old randall sounds great and would fit in the front seat of my old ford escort

I have several of the old Mesa ones and I love them. However, I'm not certain they weigh significantly less than my 4x12s. I had some of those ADA 2x12 that were just half a 4x12 back in the 90's. They weren't bad at all, but I was young and tossed anything around easily at the time, so hard to say now.

I have multiple;
a few diagonal 2x12, measuring roughly 24" x 24", and the Mesa vertical, measuring 24" wide by 30" high. Had an Engl V30 2x12 vertical in the past too (paired with my 1st Savage 60).

Depending on the quality of the woods and workmanship, it may weigh considerably less than some well built 4x12's, but similar to other 4x12's;
Engl 4x12 Pro (V30) for instance; super heavy duty. 125lbs (~56kg)
Marshall 1960A 4x12; 79lbs (36kg)
Mesa vertical 2x12; 70lbs (32kg)

By comparison, my Marshall 1966A and B (diagonal 2x12) are a bit lighter, around 55lbs (25kg).
Personally, I'm just a big fan, and therefore also looking for heads that are around 20 to 24" wide.
Weight/logistic/tone/performance ratio is IMO optimal.

When you say the old Mesas are you taking about the halfbacks or rectifier vertical?

How did you like the Engl compared to the Mesa?

I never had them at the same time, and there was almost 10 years in between them.
What I mostly remember, is that the Engl sounds a tad more focussed and punchy and the Mesa sounds bigger/wider.
I replaced the top Mesa V30 speaker with a G12-65 for more smoothness and low-end and placed a beamblocker in front of the lower V30. Very nicely balanced tone.
I will say, at home I'm using the Marshall 2x12 1966B (bottom/straight cab) the most, which houses the other Mesa V30 speaker, combined with a vented '85 T75; awesome combo!

I have a Mojotone angled 2x12. It's honestly not been the most awesome experience and if I had to do it over again I'd buy something else. It's very bass heavy. With bright speakers (Man-o-Wars) it's OK. Probably be OK with V30s too.
