Longtime OD808 user but have a Dragon inbound, what can I expect in comparison?

I had one and I preferred my OD-9 to it, so off it went. The Dragon is a killer pedal though. Definitely more focused, tighter and more tweakable than my Maxon, but my Maxon has a warmer, juicier tone that I prefer. That aside, I would definitely recommend the Dragon.

That's a good video. A good reminder that most overdrives need to be tested with you in the room and on your gear.

So do you prefer the OD808 or the OD-9 in general? Also, did you think the Dragon was on the noisy side? My OD808 is relatively quiet.

I do prefer my OD-9 in general. My particular pedal is the Analogman Brown modded Maxon OD-9. It’s not as versatile or tight as the VFE, but it’s got a more organic tone to it which I prefer. I did not find the Dragon to be excessively noisy, but I don’t usually play with so much gain that noise is an issue.

I know what you mean... when I tested the Dragon vs all of my other pedals, like the Timmy, Cusack Screamer, SD-1, original TS-9, etc, I noticed they all have hair on the bottom end tone. It can be pleasing to the ear since it’s a little soft. The Dragon is very crisp and clear (not sterile) and with the high and low pass filters, makes it crazy versatile. For the tone I’m after, I really like the VFE pedals.

Totally agree. It’s a great pedal, and definitely not sterile sounding. More like precise sounding. I also had the Pinball, which was also really cool, but I preferred the Dragon. The high and low pass filters are extremely versatile. Too versatile for me, because I was doing too much knob turning.  I guess I prefer the set it and forget it simplicity of my OD-9.

I know this is off topic to a small degree, but I would look at an ibanez jet screamer. You can find them for $40 and I love both of mine. I like them better than my od808, and have two. One to boost the rectifier and one on the rivera knucklehead K100.
