I have to admit that after listening a bunch more times today, I do like it better than I did the first time around. Still not loving it but it grew on me a little. For me, its still missing that something special that made me fall in love with VH in the first place. Im still hopeful that the new album will deliver the goods in some form or another and that live, they will bring the bombast that made them who they are..

EVH is the reason why I play guitar and As a HUGE Van Halen fan I am Glad to see Eddie looking healthy and playing again.

As far as the tune is concerned, I can't help thinking that it's probably the Most Un-Van Halen Van Halen tune that Ive ever heard but that's just me.

Completely agree Ralph, that song is so un-Van Halen IMO..

The lyrics are very "Drop Dead Legs." It's growing on me...gotta say, it actually sounds like it would come across better live than on recording.

The song was ok. A little safe to say the least. I do think all of the critics of Hagar's lyrics need to shut it though after hearing this.

My issue is that while EVH played well, the guitar sounds like a pissed off bee hive fed through a sub woofer. Or, more likely, a direct box or sims sadly in this day and age.

I thought the same about the tone too. The songs groove starts out cool but goes to lamesville pretty quick. Sounds like they had no foundation and layered all this gimmicky shit on top trying to make a song. I honestly don't need or want to hear it again.

You are correct- you will be proven wrong :D You guys just hold on. Waaaaaiiiitttt for it. You're gonna get knocked on your ass. This is just the single, and I think it's a good medium tempo rocker. There's more to the picture....

Pete, are you maybe implying there's a story being told here? Have VH made a quasi concept album?

Sounds like VH to me  Big drums, loud guitars, cool solo, goofy Dave vocals. As I read through this thread, I'm thinking wtf is everyone really expecting? It's not 1981...EVH is an old dude now who appears to have straightened his life out and actually made a new record...with DLR!! I don't think they have a meanstreets or sinner's swing left in them to be honest but I hope I'm proven wrong when the record comes out :D

My prediction: VH sell a bunch of records, goes on tour and entertains the masses which is what they have always done.

As long as it's free, I'll give a listen...

After hearing this one though, I'm concerned about Dave's "singing". He was badass back in the day - very underrated as a singer on record IMO - but he is audibly straining when he starts going for higher notes and it sounds terrible... Same problem with the two songs he did with them for the greatest hits package, although I did like the songs themselves...

I'm sure track 2 on the album will be much better.
On VH II I didn't like track 1 either.
Snore... Snore... Snore... Snore...

Steve
You should get to bed earlier.
What can I say? New VH makes me incredibly sleepy...

Steve
Well at least get some help for that sleep apnea.

Roth is a lot like Henry Winkler. Both Diamond Dave and the Fonz were pretty cool 30 years ago.....today.....not so much!

I went back and listened a few more times and I have come to a conclusion. I pretty much only like DLR on the track. The rest is a snoozefest. Even the chorus is wack. They are just not tight, and there is no real solid groove that is grabbing me. Plus, I am not really digging EVH's tone. I think we need Pete Thorn to be subbing for EVH on this album. Pete get in there and remind him how to do it.

Henry Winkler has always been cool. I think you to keep that comparison strictly with the Fonz, but then again DLR is a real person...so it still wouldn't work.

Im always up for a good laugh, maybe you or Todd can elaborate?
Most everyone here wanted them to bring back the old stuff. They did. They didn't like it. Yet, it was taken from an old song. Then when it was found out to be an old song, the old song was better!!

Entertaining.

Because it's not a bad song but we all had expectations. Some expectations were greater than others. Of the things I dislike about this song, it is the effort to make it the "old". The Dave pre-guitar solo yeah-----yay---yeaahhh---ohhhhhhyeeeeeaaaaahhhhhhh was very out of place, and dates the shit out of it. I kind of hate that part. A couple of "everybodies" and other things I can't make out could have been removed. I, for the first time ever, wish there was no intro and perhaps even the outro solo, although I can deal with. It just dates it.

All that said, I am happy as hell I am hearing new Van Halen, and like you, it didn't sit well at first but has grown enough that I can enjoy it, particularly if I dump my expectations and just take it for what it is.

I would agree if they sounded the same but that clearly wasnt the case. If that sounded like old VH to you or you think that somehow represented the old stuff that people were looking to hear, then I think you may have missed the point..

I think this song is a good song for like the 5th spot on an album. I like it but not something I would release as a single first, especially when everyone is waiting for the first DLR record since 1984. "She's a Woman" would have been a better choice to recapture some of that classic feel for the waiting fans.

It can't be any worse than the Gary Cherone album. In fact, if song 1 is "Tattoo" and song 2 is "She's a Woman" and the other 10 or so are recordings of each band member taking a dump, it will still sound better than the Gary Cherone album.

Well, I didnt get to enjoying it and Im not sure that I will but it does sit a little bit better than it did at first listen.

Im not sure why youd have a beef with something that sounds dated. The Beatles, Zeppelin,Jimi havent put out records in decades and they get new fans every day. AC/DC has changed very little if at all and there still going hella strong. Steven Tyler still sings like he did 40 years ago. Van Halen built up a HUGE following with that "dated" stuff and it just happens to garner them fans to this day, more than Id be willing to bet Van Hagar does. Its a style that you either dig or you dont but to call it dated and use that term in a negative light just doesnt make any sense.

If Dave started rapping, would that be better for you? Maybe we'll all be surprised and there will be a duet with DLR and Young Jeezy or Usher even!!!

My personal opinion is that if something works, stick with it because it just doesnt get old as long as you arent plagarising yourself

whats so funny? The fact that "This place" has an opinion and/or preference?

I am entertained.

We are entertained by this forum. Not sure what there is to explain since pretty much everyone who comes here obviously do for some sort of entertainment value.

Well, If I find something entertaining, I can give the reason as to why I find it entertaining and I dont have a problem giving or explaining the reason why I find it entertaining.

I was just curious as to the whats and whys of what you find entertaining about "this place" in regards to the OT... I dont see it as being a hard question to answer so I suppose you have your reasons..

Spandex "worked" back then too. Not something I care to see a return to.
