Dear members,

First time poster on rig Talk. I have an issue with my VH4 and it would be great if I could get some advice :D

2 months ago I bought my first Diezel. It's a brand new 50watt einstein. I play mainly rock/metal and I really love this amp for it. It's tight and articulate on the mega mode but also has a very nice clean channel. Only recently I had the opportunity to also buy a second hand VH4 from 2004. Ofcourse I expected, for heavy purposes, a slightly better amp then the Einstein. But my experience is different.

I noticed the VH4 is a lot darker I have to dial in more presence then with the einy. Main issue ch3 seems not a tight as the Einstein Mega mode with gain maxed  Ch4 with gain past noon the sound gets a little "muddy" or undefined. The chuncky stuff is not tight but more or less britle as this makes any sense, also fastpicking seems thin and not as thight as expected. My T-rex MAD is able to compensate a little but I hoped to be able to play without.

I know the powertubes are 4/5 years old. Could this be the reason for this? Also read some post about the 2007 VH4 having more gain and beter gain structures. Seems like there's a "mod" available at diezel? Could anyone give me some advice on this issue? BTW I use a Engl 212 cab with V30's.

Many thanks for any advice

1st mistake: you should never expect an einstein to sound any less good than a more expensive amp

2nd mistake: "gain maxed"

;)

Neither amp needs the gain maxed. Maybe Einstein on channel 1 mode 2 with low output pickups. It takes awhile to latch onto the "less is more" sometimes.

I like to think of the vh4 like a guillotine. It's heavy, quick, thick and will cut your f'ing head off.

Get new tubes all around, turn your gain down and rock out with your ... you get the picture.

Although I have no intention to max the gain it is no problem on the einstein it wil handle it with ease. But anyway I will change the tubes asap. I seems like the Shuguang's are nowaday used for Diezel amps so I will order them. I was just wondering if this problem could be contributed to bad tubes.

@ericsabbath you're absolutely right about the first mistake  The einstein is really a piece of art!!

Anyway is Shuguang EL34B's with Shuguang 12AX7B HG a good choice right now?

we can solve the issue with the muddyness.
Please send an email to peterdiezel (at) diezelamplification (dot) com

Well a quick update, the VH4 is now at a local tech. We put a mathced quad of JJ EL34L is the amp. Also a simple mod tot ingrease presence. Sound amazing now!
