Hi everybody,
My story: I bought a VHT 2/50/2 off of eBay, loved it. Love It! I'm using it with a Peavey Rockmaster Preamp driving an Avatar 2x12 loaded with celestions.

Bummer is, it runs hot. I'm just going on the way the top plate feels as I run it for 30 minutes and up. I leave one rack space above it, so it doesn't cook the Peavey, and for ventilation. It still seemed to get too hot to me. I finally started using it with the top plate off, as it would start to show an intermittent volume fade after warming up. The fan works fine.

I believe that the previous owner may have experienced this-the unit was shipped sans most of the top plate screws, and they got lost somehow. I asked for info., but in classic eBay style he wouldn't communicate after-sale.

I need to get this VHT into a shop that is completely reliable. Does anyone know of a good tech facility that's trustworthy and in the Southern California area? Thank you so much for any info-I really need this thing back on its feet.

Why not go on a road trip and have Fryette look at it? If you call ahead, you could probably arrange to drop it off and pick it up all in the same day.

Isn't Steve Fryette in SoCal? Either way, give them a call or email. They seem like good people there.

(Just in case you've been living under a rock: Fryette Amps formerly was VHT, so they'll know what's up).

Good news I have. My tech-savvy friend made it over with his tube tester and proved conclusively that I had several bad tubes causing the problems. He subbed in a couple of old ECC83's that had seen use but were still within useful limits. The VHT is working, for the time being, and I'm getting a new tubeset on the way so that it will be good to go for the foreseeable future. Tone is back!

Has anyone tried 6CA7's in an amp like this? I'm kind of thinking of going the extra deniro.
