Just had both them amps at my place a couple weeks back.
To me they sounded REALLY REALLY CLOSE.

I have to say the KR7  But I need more time with both of them to really form an accurate opinion.

That Ultra Lead with the KT88's in it had to of been the loudest amp I have heard in my life!

Seriously, how many amps have you had? Is it over 100? I have only had maybe 12 tops, and that is still a good handful.

Peace!

I love the ktre and i heard the kr7 is just more badass then that. That being said...el34s aren't my thing. I'd pick the ultralead all day.

I agree, I thought my mark iii was the loudest until I got an Ultra-Lead.

That was during the AMPFEST that I had both amps in the same room.
The Rivera was mine and the Ultra Lead was Sixtonoize. He did own both the Rivera and the UL at the same time though. Told me they were similar. But he kept the UL and the Rivera hit the road. So that should say somthing about the UL.
I liked both the amps. Wish I had more time to play the VHT though.

The VHT is tighter, drier, and cuts better; the Rivera is more aggressive, has more gain/saturation (a LOT more), and is looser.
You can definitely dial them to be pretty similar.

I like tight and dry, so I kept the UL, but I think that the KR7 is probably more likely to be useful to someone who isn't into the VHT level of dryness. They're both great amps, and I wouldn't mind owning another KR7, but since I had to choose I kept the UL. It's totally personal preference.

UL if you want tight.
CLX if you want tight and some EL34 growl.
I never dug the Riveras due to a fizzy top end that can't be dialed out in high gain from what I've tried.
I'd definitely go Fryette

I have had 3 Riveras and in my opinion, just about the only way to get rid of the high endy thing that you are talking about is to open up the master. Rivera's are some of the best amps that I have ever used and have the best clean channels hands down. Only problem I have with them is that to get the gain tones you have to turn them up louder than all hell. They do react very well to dirt boxes pushing the clean channel however.

Quoted for truth. When I got my first Rivera I honestly thought it had some tube issues until I cranked it up. They´re squashed fizz until you get up to around 4 on the master, and there they turn awesome. But the basic voicing is never silky smooth, Paul Rivera seems to enjoy a bit of grit to the high gain tones... which might sound a bit harsh on its own, but shines in a mix or with a band.

When Alex brang his Ultra lead over, we were doing some Headcutting trading riffs back and forth between the Ultra Lead and the Rivera KR7.
They sounded pretty damn similar to me.
Same type of voicing in my opinion.
The UL seemed WAY MORE powerfull though. Those KT88s were just CRUSHING in the power department.
But I really enjoyed the KR7 when I owned it.

I agree with this statement 100%. I have owned a Rivera K-Tre and sold it within 2 months because it was too fizzy on the highs, almost buzzy. I've owned two CLX models (still have one, although I am selling it since I need money   ) and I have played a few ULs which didn't sound all that great but they were also used in Guitar Centers so it's hard to say how old the tubes were or if they had been abused. Personal opinion I'd take a VHT over a Rivera based on my experience although I haven't tried the KR7 which supposedly sounds a bit different than the K-Tre.
