Why does the CLX list at around $2000.00 more than the SigX ???

This bothers me...

Kw

You're bothered that VHT found a way to reduce the price of the Sig?

No...not bothered, just wondering "how" they found the way.

What corners were cut, what was sacrificed... How do they build an amp with more features than their current flagship, and cut the cost in half. Something has to be drastically different. Is it important to the durability etc.

Personally, I don't see how anyone can trust their shipping claims anyway. 3-15 weeks? Isn't that about the same time span that was promised almost exactly a year ago?l

Obviously, Steve Fryette is not going to get on here and provide hundreds of component pricing comparisons, but when I was out there for the Sig:X wank party he explained that making the amp affordable was one of the goals from the get-go, but at the same time avoiding the use of "cheap" components was key. Most of it was beyond my understanding because I'm not a component guy and he was talking about stuff above my head.

I believe you've already made up your mind about most of this so I'll assume it's rhetoric.

Not that I know anything about anything, but the way I see it there's an awful lot of man hours going into an Ultra Lead. With that in mind you CAN design a new product so it can be assembled faster.

The only thing I've made my mind up about is that VHT is almost as bad as Peavey about getting new amps on the market. I'm genuinely curious about how they were able to get the price that low. The UL I owned was an extremely well built, solid amp, if the Sig-X is built the same way, how did they drop the price so much? If Ford comes out with a new truck that has a 3.5 liter motor, that has the same 550-600ft lbs of torque my 7.3 liter motor does, I'm going to ask how they did it, and how well it will hold up. Because I honestly want to know how that happens. Until I see it, I'm going to be a little skeptical and I don't think that's an abnormal reaction.

You jogged my memory with your point. The layout was certainly optimized to allow less man hours for assembly, and Steve mentioned it.

To think you're going to get those answers here is not realistic. You know where I'm going with this, right?

Maybe they're using the Marshall JVM-style wobblyknobs PCB for the controls?

Yes, or maybe they're not.

Ok... Just talked to Marcus from VHT.
They are using much of what they've learned with their Deliverence Amps in terms of chassis and layout/ preamp, power amp.
Plus, the CLX is handbuilt from top to bottom by the master builder as they are only built special order, MUCHO time is spent building one CLX...
All VHT amps have top notch solid components.
I'm absolutely certain VHT will not cheap out on this amp! Their reputation is built on it!!!
It's going to be great!!

Keith

If it has chassis mounted pots, jacks and tubes I'll buy one.

It sounds fantastic based on the limited clips I've heard, and it appears very versatile.

Same for the Cameron CCV-100 - those will be my next 2 amps I believe.

I'm guessing you won't be buying one then......

Here's more info, straight from the Steve Fryette:

"There are 3 very obvious areas where costs go away easily without
sacrificing any quality:

1 - No Graphic.
2 - Two KT88s at 98 watts instead of four at 120 watts, and reliability
is not an issue here since we have a proven track record on the 2/90/2
power amp with 2 KT88s at 105 watts/channel.
3 - New footswitch design. This one is more sophisticated and is all on
PCB with new hi-reliability switches.
Since it's PCB based, it's less costly to build.

The not so obvious things have mostly to do with planning in advance to
avoid unnecessarily time consuming assembly operations. We've been doing
this for 20 years now and that design experience was brought to bear in
a big way on the Sig:X. making it not only less time consuming to build,
but every bit as bullet-proof as existing designs. We didn't spend 20
years building a reputation for great build quality only to toss that
commitment to the wind for profits sake.

But the reality is, it will speak for itself soon enough. When that
happens, all this talk of our cheesing out will evaporate pretty much
instantaneously."

One additional item from Steve:

"And....pots, jacks and power tube sockets are secured to both the
chassis and PCB just like we've done on all the other models since our
inception - as noted on the Deliverance board :)"

The SigX youtube clip did sound quite good. I'd like to try one at some point

Maybe not. For that kind of money I expect a certain level of quality in construction. I haven't seen anything that indicates these components will not be chassis mounted, but when (if) the amp actually arrives in stores I'll know.

I'm not really into VHT's, but Steve F. seems like a really cool dude. Anybody with that kind of sense of humor about these things is OK by me.
