Loos like a nice little man cave indeed

The 68s, from what I understand can be 10 or 12 series. Starting off as 10 series, then 12 (EVHs amp), then back to 10k for the end of 68 and into 69 until mid year when the metal panels started and the serials changed to letter A + 4 digits. 68 super leads have the 2 cans up top like yours (and mine) and 4 underneath. 67s, I think had 1 can up top for a while then maybe 2. 67s can also be 10 series so it's hard to really nail down a later 67 from an early 68.My 67 has the PI and preamp can caps. The rest are underneath on the board. Laydown PT. Always thought it was a 68…but it is a 10,000 serial number. 2 speaker jacks and polarity switch. My ‘69 plexi is March and the Metal is August. Look identical inside other than the plexi only has 2 speaker jacks and polarity switch while the Metal has 4 speaker jacks and polarity switch. And the standby switch is wired differently. Going to change polarity switches and wire it like my plexi at some point.
I will have to do more sleuthing next time I have it open. The original caps are in a bag somewhere, should look at the date codes. The 150uf mains caps are 67, not sure month or week. The 68s, from what I understand can be 10 or 12 series. You can also date the Mustards/pots though, and if they date to the beginning or middle part of 67 it's probably a 67. There's a super knowledgable dude (more than 1 of course) on the Marshall Forum who has notes as to what color lead wire was used, brands of resistors/caps etc for each month of certain years of Marshall production.
My 69, the ghosting was so bad I had to up the mains filtering from 32/32 350v to 50/50/500v. Solved it. The date on the TCC cap was the 4th quarter 68. Jives with it being an early 69.I will have to do more sleuthing next time I have it open. The original caps are in a bag somewhere, should look at the date codes. One site I was looking at said 10,000 was 67 12,000 was 68. But could have been partially right or wrong info.
My Metalpanel 69 has the A plexipanel does not.
I forgot I did have a 68 Supertrem 100 for a short time. It had a box fan cut in the side and kept shocking the crap out of me so I took it back. Way before I learned how to work on them.![]()
I just read that the early 68s could have 1 can cap on top...so if yours has 2, definitely a 68. They are the most desirable of all the 100w Marshalls because of the EVH reference.I will have to do more sleuthing next time I have it open. I was just looking at the caps I took out of the Super Trem. Two axial 32/32 450 marked TCC and one RS 32/32 can. I know there is another somewhere. Tried to find some date codes, not sure what they might be.I just read that the early 68s could have 1 can cap on top...so if yours has 2, definitely a 68. Great condition, unmodded (except for filter caps of course) can command 5 figures. Total museum pieces with all original parts, 20k. Maybe more.
if you’re ever planning a trip to Oahu, you must visit my friend’s shop—Dan’s Guitars. The ultimate boutique candy store! new and used amps ( vintage marshalls and fenders galore, friedmans, two rock, carr, synergy, fuchs, diezel, fryette, red plate) /new and vintage gtrs/pedals/rack gear/acoustics/ukuleles….Loos like a nice little man cave indeed![]()
Reading up on ghosting, there are quite a few causes for it. Mostly low filtering though. I was lucky in that just upping the mains filtering totally solved it. The sound was so bad, it was like a broken chorus pedal. Mostly on the A, D strings below 12th fret which is different than most descriptions where it happens in the upper register. Everyone chases the 68 SLs because of Ed; but I've read about so many great sounding 69s that I think they may be the best year to have. This one here, I wouldn't trade it for any other Plexi. Aggressive yet sags just enough. Great sound. As much gain as a lightly boosted 2203...anyone who doesn't believe these amps can have a nice amount of gain plugging straight in, needs to hear one of these 69s.I was just looking at the caps I took out of the Super Trem. The Mallory 150uf I am thinking are non original, but have always been in it since I bought it in ‘89 off a friend of mine. They are marked 677-88xx. I was thinking the 67 was 67 but now I think they are ‘88. I temember my friend saying something about big caps when I bought it. It probably had 32/32 450 for mains also.
This Super Trem doesn’t really ghost. The 69 Metal has always, this 78 2203 I just picked up ghosts alittle. Gonna put 100/100 in it maybe this weekend. I already recapped it and redid all the grounding. It is my experiment, play around with amp.
My SuperTrem was already missing the trem board, footswitch jack and now has a replaced PT since the bias winding went out. May get it rewound some day and put back in. It is a pretty good sounding amp, but not near as good as the 69 plexi.
Lucky for me I hate the VH sound so ‘68 isn’t a must have for me if that is the big part of his soundReading up on ghosting, there are quite a few causes for it. Mostly low filtering though.
