Vintage Marshall Super Lead Shoot out clip

OK guys, here's the deal. At home, I have my 1983 Marshall 2204, a 1970 Super Tremelo, a 1972 Super Lead, a Mojave Peacemaker and a Splawn Quickrod, all stock.

Having two old Marshalls and the Peacemaker is a bit redundant tone-wise and I am thinking about adding a modern high gain beast to my collection. So for the hell of it, I was doing a shoot out clip with these three amps. I just put new tubes in my Peacemaker and the bias is not reset yet so this isn't even really fair to that amp. I know that I am setting the EQ controls way different than I ever have with the amp so I have to get it in for biasing soon.

Then, for the fun of it, I threw down the Splawn Quickrod on Gear 1, OD1 with the gain at about 2:00 in an attempt to simulate a stock old Super Lead. I didn't even touch the EQ on the Splawn while I messed with the other amps quite a bit to dial them in. I wasn't even going to include the Splawn in this shoot out, but what the heck? The Marshalls and the Mojave amps were cranked on 10 with a THD Hot Plate set to -8db and the Splawn volume was set to match. In other words, stupid STUPID loud.

I posted this shoot out on four different websites. I would say that overall it was a tie between amp #2 and amp #4 for most 1st or 2nd place picks. Although there were some guys whose playing and or ears I really respect picking amp #1 as their favorite. Amp #3 is disliked the most, by far. So here they are:

I was shocked at the amount of die-hard vintage Marshall fans that picked #4 as their favorite or second favorite, even when matched up against real vintage Marshalls and one of the best boutique vintage "Marshalls" out there.

I pretty much knew that the first clip was the super trem and it doesn't surprise me that #2 (my favorite) was a peacemaker but I am blown away that #4 was the splawn. FWIW I thought they all sounded good but if you want to get rid of one of the Marshalls, I would make it the super trem.

Tons of guys were picking the Splawn that normally "don't like them". Plus, this isn't even really what the Splawn is designed to do, beat a stock vintage Marshall at it's own game. It's forte is as a hot-rodded Marshall style amp.

Count me in as one of the guys who "normally don't like them." I liked the splawn clip because it was very focused but listening back, it doesn't seem as dynamic as the others. I also can't really make up my mind whether or not I like 1 or 3 better. I think 1 sounds great in the first round of clips but gets very mushy in the second round. I still think that for my purposes 2 and 4 sound the best but I think that there are times during those clips when the Marshalls sound great. They are certainly less consistent than the splawn or peacemaker though.

What kind of high gainer are you thinking abut getting?

Tyler

I am really undecided as far as the high gainer goes. Heck, I may just throw the unneeded amp in the back room at my store and keep it. The value is certainly not going down on vintage Marshalls. I'm just getting tired of tripping over all these amps on my floor here.

The thing that cracks me up here is this is as far as the Super Leads and Peacemaker can even go gain-wise without a pedal. That's not a diss. This is their ultimate stock amount of gain or heaviness. Yet, this is where the Splawn starts and it does a pretty darn good job in an area it should get it's ass kicked.

To be honest, this is the closest that the Marshalls have ever come to the Peacemaker and when I get the Mojave biased with these new tubes I think it will regain the obvious edge it has had over these same Marshalls for three years now.

I'm simply blown away at how you got all of them to sound so damn similar! The QR is definitely a surprise!

so are you keeping the splawn? =D

Well guess this shows my vintage Marshall ears.....my top two being the Splawn and PM :D

I am really sick of getting owned by these polls

Awesome! Kinda funny how most people thought you should ditch the '72 Super Lead.

I'm surprised to find out that my favorite was the Super Trem but not surprised that I wasn't overly fond of the Peacemaker. I've never really liked that amp in clips, I don't know why.

I think you should ditch the '72 and hang on to the super trem. The peacemaker sounds like a better version of the super lead while the super trem kinda has its thing going on a little bit more.

Not trying to own anyone here Scott. I like these blind clips though because it helps people to drop preconceived opinions about amps and just listen.

Not talking about you owning me, just me showing my lack of vintage ears! I have gotten better with the modern stuff but I do have lots to learn and it is funny how some of the guys were sniffing out the Splawn like Ralph and RVS.

Thanks for taking the time, I learned alot by this thread :)

wow.. very cool chubtone, nicely done. I am impressed how they all where very close. bias up #3.. see if it get it together :-O

Link is dead. I would love to hear this clip if possible.

Considering how many people didn't like #3 I'm sure it will sell quickly in the soon to come classified thread for it.

Sorry man. This was a 3.5 year old clip that lived on my old computer that is no longer working. I still own all the amps from this clip though. The Quick Rod and the Peacemaker are still my clear favorites.

No problem, but thanks for the response. I knew it was a shot in the dark considering the age of the thread.

So the verdict on the Quick Rod was that it was able to emulate the tones of the cranked Marshalls (and Mojave), but with tighter bass?

My '73 Super Lead should be arriving any day now, so I can't wait to make some comparisons with the QR. On top of the fantastic hot-rodded tones the QR can do, I'd be thrilled if I could get it to do these types of traditional Marshall tones as well: https://www.youtube.com/user/Plexi335. Not what the QR was designed to do, but I've been looking for them anyway. I think I really need to get the QR's powertubes COOKING with some serious volume and maybe that will do the trick. I absolutely love everything else the QR is able to do.

Chubtone,
is there a place in OC you recommend to get amps biased/tuned up etc...?

most places I see recommended are in the valley

Text fusionbear on Rig Talk. He's a good buddy of my store and he works on my amps. He doesn't do this for a living because he can make more money doing other work but he does do some work on the side. He used to work for Jose back in the day and has experience with Mojave amplifiers. You can pick up and drop off your amp at the store here if that would be more convenient for either of you.
