Just wondering if anyone heard any news about Vivian in lieu of Ronnie's passing? I'm not sure if he was there at the service for Ronnie...I seen Craig Goldy and a few others carrying the casket but no Vivian. I know they had a falling out and wern't talking but Ronnie did give Vivian's his break.

I don't think they ever settled their differences, but it would be a huge sign of respect if Vivian said something positive. It makes him look like an asshole if he says nothing IMO.

Agreed.
This is why I was asking...you'd think he would say something positive. Ronnie put him on the fucking map!! Vivian had the talent but so do thousands of others that never get the chance. I always respected Viv but so far it doesn't look good.

fuck Vivian Campbell. The things he said about DIO in the past are disrespectful and idiotic. I never did think he was that great of a player too, especially live, sloppy lead playing with no soul.

Ya know Bro, I always dug Viv's playing and still do. However , due to his disrespectful comments about RJD in the past, Im inclined to agree with you on the F him part. Without RJD, Viv would probably be just another guy who played guitar taking up space on a stool in a Belfast pub...

I think he is an incredible guitar player but if he didn't at least pay respect he's a dick and fuck him!!

Fuck Vivian Campbell, even if he did play the solo that made me want to play guitar.

I have always thought he was a tasteful player in Dio and the Riverdogs , but never heard about him talking bad about Ronnie .

I am really very interested in this !

Anyone know what was really said ???

Very true Kage ! I would agree on this , but i really am curious what the hell he said

I don't know what Viv has said about Ronnie other than calling him out for what he believed to be a situation where he was taken advantage of and not compensated appropriately. No doubt that Dio put him on the map, but it could be argued that Viv helped to launch RJD's solo career as well...he was the right kind of player at the right time (this was before the scene was inundated with technically proficiant players...those with chops and a unique voice were few and far between). Would I be considered a douchebag if I railed against a company that gave me my first real job but then failed to compensate me as promised??? I would hope not.

Additionally, if somebody spoke about me in the manner that Ronnie speaks about Viv in the above video (I hope he dies!!!???), I can't really see me shedding any tears or offering any kind words at their passing.

Intersting point , but do you think he really meant that ? I think we all have been guilty of making a comment at one time or another in our lives about someone like that , but that doesn't mean we were really serious about it .

With Ronnie making a comment like that about Viv one can't help but wonder about the hurt feelings Ronnie had over the situation and I don't know the story , but I have never heard anything bad about Dio .

In fact I have only heard he was such a down to earth guy who really loved his fans and friends and really loved life . I think with him being so upset over a situation that happened several years back that Viv did something that was really in poor taste and disrespectful , but I still would love to know what that was !!!

Yeah, I cant recall anything beyond the lack of compensation and I have heard that RJD didnt exactly pay all that well but like everything else, its all just hearsay and its not like we're ever really going to find out or be privy to the truth.

I remember reading something long ago where Viv talked some smack about YJM and when Ynwie was confronted by the statements, YJM's response was " Im not sure why he would say something like that, Hes playing with the greates singer in rock, I envy his position" Which was pretty impressive considering that it came out of YJM's mouth LOL!!!!

You do bring up some damn good points that are hard to argue with though, cant deny that bro,,,

Did some digging, and I discovered that the real reason Viv parted ways with Dio was that Viv's wife was a Jehova's Witness and wanted to co-manage the band with Wendy Dio ! She also demanded that the Dio band should only play "clean and respectful establishments". No wonder Campbell goes out of his way to distance himself from all things metal. Sounds like a real life Spinal Tap situation to me !

I never found Vivian Campbell to be a "special" player. But I do remember how for me, the first few notes in the "Last In Line" solo can make me actually smell that particular Summer.

From Dio in an interview:

ME: That’s superb. Just one more question for you. You’ve had press recently regarding Vivian Campbell. Is that something that you are quite passionate about?

Dio: No I’m not passionate about it. I think that the lowly vermin that captured that on his cell phone at a moment when you are saying something that perhaps you would never say to the press, or something that you didn’t really mean that much, but you know, sometimes situations dictate what you say. And once again that was something that was completely off the record.

Apparently I said something bad about the band as well, about Def Leppard, and once again all of things that were said were said in the heat of the moment. No reference to them at all, and I would like to apologise to those guys. I like them. It wasn’t fair to them, but as far as Vivian goes, all I can say is check out the source, and then see what that source has been saying and sometimes you reply. Most of the time I have been taking the high road on all of it and I have not said anything on it. I have praised Vivian so much and I think that he deserves praise for as great as he played, but you know that was just a retort to the things that he had said about me first, and once again in an unguarded moment, I feel that I was very unfair, but I said what I said.

But I am not passionate about hating him, no. I have better things to do with my life than to think about revenge or being a horrible person. Of course I don’t want him to die! What I said was, once again a heat of the moment thing. Those thing can not be explained unless you speak to the source which is me I guess, like you are doing. So no, I have no passion about that whatsoever.

ME: I wasn’t sure how you would take it but I thought it was worth asking. To sort of clarify it.

Dio: Well if I say something I will certainly explain what my motive was and what my method is. So thanks for giving me the opportunity to say it.

ME: Your very welcome. Thank you very much for talking to me.

Some of what Viv said about Ronnie:

In a recent interview posted on DEF LEPPARD's official web site, current DEF LEPPARD/former DIO guitarist Vivian Campbell talked about his disdain for hard rock. "The real irony of that is I actually don't like hard rock music," he said. "I know it's a strange thing to say, but I don't really care about my past contributions. Even now I still get these guys coming up to me going 'Duuuuuuuude!', giving me the DIO devil sign and yelling 'Holy Diver!!' and 'Rainbow In The Dark, whoo hoo!!' and it's cool that they remember it, but that music never mattered to me — and still doesn't." Campbell went on to praise and rip Ronnie James Dio, with whom he had an acrimonious split in the mid-'80s, "Oh yeah, night after night, [Ronnie] was absolutely on the money," Vivian said. "An incredibly strong voice and within that niche genre of dungeons and dragons and rainbows and midgets... You know, the sorta old school heavy metal, he's an incredible talent. But he's an awful businessman and way more importantly, one of the vilest people in the industry."

You're remembering that situation wrong bro. Viv was gushing over YJM's playing saying he wished he could play that way and felt irrelevant since YJM came along. That is what YJM was responding to as you describe above. Viv was not bashing him at all, he was praising him...

I have actually talked to both Viv and Ronnie over the years about this topic.

Vivian really dislikes the music he made with Dio. When I first met him around 10 years ago, he would barely even talk about it. Although I have never heard him talk bad about Ronnie personally, he sure thinks that the music they made together was "crap and irrelevant". Of couse I disagree..."Live at the Spectrum" is one of the first videos that got me playing guitar. I will say though that over the past few years when I have seen Vivian he seems to be more appreciative of those years and music with Dio.

I talked with Ronnie once backstage about Vivian and he told me that he was just sick and tired of Vivian slamming him in the press and privately. I think Ronnie was very hurt that Vivian discounted and belittled the music that they wrote together. After all, Ronnie did give him the opportunity to make a career out of music.....
