[I remember reading something long ago where Viv talked some smack about YJM and when Ynwie was confronted by the statements, YJM's response was " Im not sure why he would say something like that, Hes playing with the greates singer in rock, I envy his position" Which was pretty impressive considering that it came out of YJM's mouth LOL!!!!
You're remembering that situation wrong bro. Viv was gushing over YJM's playing saying he wished he could play that way and felt irrelevant since YJM came along. That is what YJM was responding to as you describe above. Viv was not bashing him at all, he was praising him...

Steve

i do remember this and Steve is correct. And then when Viv went on to join Def Leppard, i recall him saying, thank god cause now i dont have to try to catch up to Yngwie ( or something like that) since i could never play that way. Its praise, but just dumb IMO..i mean Yngwie's right when he said, Dude, you're playing with the greatest metal singer, why are u worried about what i do? Another reason why I never favored his style. I do like the tunes on the first DIO album though, the riff oriented stuff i dig by Viv. Even though Jake, Lynch and Warren came from the same school and era, they are had their own unique recoginzable style, which is why i like them the most in that 80's period.

just my opinion of course..

Personally, I dig Vivian's playing and I find him recognizable. That stacato attack and the way he makes slow to fast transitions in his solos are appealing to me and I like some of the tunes he wrote with Dio...

Unfortunately, he had some kind of weird complex over YJM like you say. I mean why go on and on comparing yourself to him in a negative way when you are a recognized guitar player making cool music with RJD? I mean, he could have praised YJM and said he liked his stuff without belittling himself and coming off as a bit jealous. It was kinda baffling to me at the time since I thought he was doing his own thing and was very good himself...

+1. I was just learning to really play/become proficient in the era of the first two Dio albums, his playing had a big impact on my approach.

I didn't even know about the bad blood between RJD and Vivian until this thread. :(
