Something that isn't talked about much. But is gear related. Vocal Processors.
So through the years I have learned...
A) do not count on sound man for any quality of vocals... (Not always) They do not know your music or were special fx come n go. Unless you have a hired guy.
B) it's bullshit that using a processor is difficult for a sound man to use live. Just goes to show you the quality of sound man.
So I've had the pleasure of owning so many units. Tc helicon
Voice works ,voice doubler, voice prism, voice live 2, voice rack. ,create xt, also tried a few Digitech pieces. Had a rack of personus preamp,D2 delay,M1 reverb ,Lexicon MPX 1 , and finally Boss VE20.
In short , rack full of things was nice but a pain in the ass.
Some of the earlier units were very difficult to program n some fell short in fx. A lot of hokey bs presets that are useless.
Fast forward- the voice rack and voice live 2 are amazing units. A lot if features. The harmonies are very good but I don't use them. Voice live 2 is nice being you can control by foot.
For me I don't use a lot but live I want a warm punchy vocal. Not thin n sterile. Not an ass load of reverb like I'm in the holland tunnel singing. But just some eq/comp/delay/thicken/a splash of reverb.
Nothing unrealistic.
I picked up these two units Tc Helicon Create xt & Boss VE20.Thinking the tc would be great being voicelive 2 is... But no, not that it's bad but compared to the Boss which I'm getting to, falls way short. Limited control of fx. And it's just thin compared to the Boss.
Now for the grand finally. Boss VE20. Who would have thought that little red box does what all the other units have done or tried to. It has this really warm punchy clear tone to it. I've been using it for months now. I have 3 presets a main vox, main vox w more delay n a special fx for bridges kinda thing.
Night after night I get compliments from sound guys, bands and fans. Simple set up. No problems w feedback. It's so simple to use. Editing really goes a long way but not overwhelming. I've let other singers run through it n they've said it made them feel like they cut thru n shine more. Nothing worse than a dry ass vocal.
I use it in a metal band, not screamo or death vocals. I'm legible. I've had rock singers both male n female use it live and they loved it. It really is simple and has everything I need to have that vocal night after night that I'm happy with and consistant.
Boss VE20 if your looking for that edge n something you can control with ease. This is for you.
I grabbed it for $150 used at a music store. To date it's my favorite piece of gear.
