Voodoo mods? Experience?

Love everything about my 5150 III 50w, except for the shared gain/volume and volume jump on the Green/Blue channels. Killer amp, midi's great, small footprint.

Voodoo's just released a few mods for the EVH - breaks the Green/Blue out with separate volume and gain for each. Solves that problem. They've also got a few voicing mods to address some things I've wanted for a while. Pricey at $540, but the amp's closer to what I want than anything else in the 50w market.

Any experience or reviews of Voodoo? I don't know Trace from Adam's asshole.

Nice guy, but the mods sound like bassed out muffled shit... ruined a 1959HW I sent in years ago.

^^ Couldn't disagree more. I owned a Voodoo modded JVM 410 head and it was AMAZING. He turned the JVM into what it should have been from the start. Tamed the wild squealing feedback so the entire gain sweep was usable on ch 3 and 4. Made the cleans on the green mode sweeter than a Marshall deserves, but preserved them on the other clean modes. Just fantastic work all around. I'd still own it but I profiled it so I have the goods in my KPA now.

I've also played some other amps he modded, and was similarly impressed. He's also been cool to talk to on the phone about amp stuff. I've never put a penny directly in his hands, but he's been helpful to me every time I contacted him.

To the OP, I messaged Trace last week when I heard about the 5153 50w volume mod and he told me a little about it. It sounds perfect for what you need, and I would send my amp to him without reservation. I know I probably sound like a shill, but Trace is one of just a handful of guys in this industry (also Mike Fortin, Scott Splawn, and a few others) who are great guys who do great work. I don't make many recommendations, but when it's one of these select few, I wholeheartedly endorse them.

I've had several items modded by them and they're all great. Since buying my DSL with the deluxe mod I've bought and sold over 30 amps and it's still my #1. I've had a VA modded 5150, two different JMP-1s, and I also owned a V-rock dual lead. I can't say enough great things about Trace and Voodoo.

Considering the mod for my 50 watt as well. I keep mine at our rehearsal space just for band practice. But I need a clean and hi gain sound so I use the red and green channels. But I prefer the blue which is how I gig my 100 watters. Not sure it's worth $250 and voiding the warranty just for my practice amp. The red channel sounds fine at rehearsal so I think I've answered my own question.

Glad to hear it. I'd really like to hear more clips...may have to hit Trace up directly. Hard to find a 3-channel amp with a great base tone, good clean channel, good loop, and midi functionality for under $2k...but it's also hard to justify dropping almost $600 in a $700 amp.

I've had 2 examples. A platinum Jose 1959 RI that sounded KILLER. Should've kept it. Stole it for 850 on evilbay 5 yrs ago. And a Laney AOR that had something done to it, couldn't get that to sound good no matter what I did. He seems like a good dude who works quickly and listens to what you want.....

You can book an appointment and have them mod while you wait and use your ears

One thing is for sure - Trace is a solid dude who will not take your money and make you wait forever. Never heard anything bad about him like some other builders / modders. They have been in business for quite a while now.

Super awesome guys, I've owned one of his modded dual recs and it definitely was better than stock..

I had a Mesa DR modded by them a while back. Sounded great.
Trace is good people.

Ive had some conversations with Trace. Seems like a very nice guy.We talked about getting a marshall jmp1 modded. They speacialize in that.I actually want one modded and one unmodded as I like tones from both equally.

I had him mod my JMP-1 when I was into the rack gear. Good communication and turn around time and I was pleased with the results of the Mod and sometimes wish I would of never sold it to buy a JVM. I am happy now with my 5150III 50 watt. I would be comfortable having Trace mod something for me and would recomend at least talking to him about the mod to see if it is right for you and your needs. He will tell you if it does not meet your expectations. No snake oil salesmanship. At least in my dealings with him

I had a good experience with modding my 5150 through voodoo, but I didn't care for the tonal outcome.

Why? These guys don't have many ways to protect the research that is their business.

I remember the goop thing coming up on another forum years ago. I guess they used to do it but not anymore. The Mesa I had modded around 2006 was goop free.

The goop was years ago. I've done the research. Is that your amp?

No it's not mine. I mod my own gear. That's a recent photo of a voodoo modded 70's 2203. When was it modded? No idea.
