Hi guys, I was wondering why any time I see a big band playing in a theater or in a big stadium Guitarrist always plays with an amazing wall of speakers, each one with a head.

They use to have their rig behind stage. I thought for a moment that all that amps are used on their power stage. But imaging standing in front of 5 or 6 full stack throwing 100w each, it's crazy.

Maybe could be a silly question, but I really don't know.

90% of the time those are props and their actual rig is still behind the stage.

Damn hahaha ;)

I didn't know it was a fake LoL

And what about that 10%, for what they use so many amps?

IDK man 311splawndude has a couple of amps and runs them together for an awesome sound.

Some guys have W/D rigs. I can not say for sure.

It is still mostly props. I mean, it looks cool right? So why stop.

Plus, honestly, there is lots of stuff going on behind stage and the speaker cabs hide all of that and just provide a good backdrop.

Running your guitar into more than 2 amps at the same time isn't really going to sound all that good. They may have real amp heads sitting there that even may appear to be operating but it would be unnecessary. Everything gets run into a PA system anyway. That's what you are hearing when you go to a concert. Not the speakers on the stage. True in the old days those speaker cabs were all a band had so more was better but those days are long gone.

(that picture I posted was an extreme)

I just thought they went into power section of all of that amps I can see on stage to make the sound huge or something like that.

On September of 2013 I had the chance to see slayer and Kerry king had around 8 cabs on his side.
It looks really cool. That's why I ask about it.

I run a w/d/w set up with 3x 4x12. That pic gave me the idea to make 3 more fake cabs LOL. It would see outstanding :)

Yngwie has a huge wall of vintage Marshall stacks and does use them. I think he and man o war might be the 10%

I've seen Styx recently and I think they have the best 'fake' cabs. Wall of Marshalls with light grill cloth so they can change colors with the lights really well. The stacks are all hollowed out (but full depth, maybe a bit deeper) and there is a complete guitar work station built in with tables, drawers, lights. etc. Not sure if there is a picture of them anywhere, but perfect as a cool prop that served another purpose. A couple of 5150's that were active were off the side of the stage next to the guitar closet.

lol

think about how heavy that would be if those were actual speaker cabs filled with actual speakers

to be very very very very loud

While they don't have the wall of amps backdrop, each Rammstein guitarist runs though I think 6 Mesa Rectos. They certainly get a wall of amps type sound live.

When I used to play big shows between 5,000 to 40,000 I used 4 to 6 Marshall's with one or 2 amps and the cabinets were powered by 2 power amps, I think they were Carvin's FET900. I ran my heads through a dummy load. That was before they had in ears. I hated having my guitar going through the floor monitors because of nasty feedback! I only wanted my guitar through the the side fills on the opposite side of the stage and the Marshall's took care of my side. When we went overseas we rented the 4 x 12 cabinets. I remember some of the Marshall's rattling in the back from how loud the stage volume was!

I had these saved from a KSE gig. I think this is when they were endorsed by Mesa/Boogie...

So where can you buy these things?

I saw some "shells" as they're called at a local GC. I always assumed they were made by a local prop company. I remember Sully Erna had some for sale on eBay a while back. Not sure who made theirs, but they had to get the Mesa logos and emblems from Mesa themselves...

The very few that still use all would mainly be onstage Monitors for the guitarist.
Keep in mind also, how well you play live can be a result of how good your rig sounds to you as your playing.
Probably sounds pretty awesome with 5 stacks behind you.

But its become stupid overkill with 30 cabs onstage even for show.

3 -5 standard full stacks look cool enough

Yeah. I think people just make them.
