Warren DeMartini Appreciation thread

I wasn't a huge hair-metal guy back in the day, but I loved me some Ratt. Warren is one of THE best players from that era hands-down -- and one of my favs for that particular style.

Yes Warren seemed to emulate George to an extent. However I think he cut out his own nich in the hair metal/rock genre. Also... I have no doubt that Ratt was heavily influenced by Aerosmith from the get go.

I've always thought that Warren is a MONSTER player and is up there on my all-time favs. I've never been too much of a fan for lynch

Sure, I didn't really go for the shitty singer, but back then it was about the ATTITUDE, which is what Ratt is all about. Straight up balls rock. Their shit would sound like shit with scott stapp or something.

I'll take ratt all the way

I've always loved Warren's vibrato. It's exactly what I modeled my own technique after

Despite my username, I've never owned a Ratt album. Never got into them. But everything I've heard of Warren's playing, I have dug.

Warren is a great player.

That singer needed a fucking haircut... Beings down to his nose, wtf was that

And the gay pirate?

Ratt... Proof a douche of mic beats an Ace of shred to kill a great band.

YJM is indeed a prophet.

I always thought of Di martini as a great, although one dimensional, soloist...Excellent feel but not really the total package when it came to songwriting and depth....Ratt had a great debut album, a pretty good follow up but everything else was pretty horrid IMHO...

DeMartini and Lynch don't sound the same to me and I love both of their playing styles. George Lynch sounded "darker" to me than Warren DeMartini. Even on a happy sounding song like "Burning Like a Flame", he played a solo that sounded meaner. George also seemed to be able to really stretch out a note and transition well between a flurry of notes and holding one forever. Warren's solos always seemed really tasteful but well thought out for a song. I could see George jamming with folks easier than Warren.

I was a huge Warren DeMartini fan in high school in the 80's and recently even picked up one of his signature Charvels from a forumite. He was my hero in high school but all of us had just as much love for Lynch back then. I think it is easy to see the whole "modded Marshalls, Charvels, picking style" thing and see them as similar but if you really listen, they were doing different things.

WDM is my favorite out of the 80's glam metal scene. I like Lynch a lot too, but WDM's playing really "strikes a chord" with me. Ronni LeTekro is right up there too.

I have the Duncan Custom Shop Demartini pickups. I like them substantially betterh than my Aldrich pickups

Are those the same as the ones that come in his signature guitar? I have the "Blood and Skull" one and I think it has the RATM (I think that is the name) pickup in the bridge. I had an Aldrich in my Les Paul (that I traded for the DeMartini) :). I loved the Aldrich but I think you are right. The DeMartini pickups are nice.

Being that I was 4 when Ratt's first record came out, Warren was a bit before my time, but I started revisiting Ratts music I remember older kids playing in the mid-late 80's a few years ago. DeMartini has a phrasing and taste that few players then had.

Yes, I am referring to the RTM

I don't understand the Pearcy bashing. Yeah, he's no Bono, but he fits the bill. Kinda like Axl with GnR. As far as Ratt as a whole, I think they're underrated. I didn't realize just how many great songs they have until I got their Ratt & Roll 81-91 greatest hits CD. Just in that 10 year span they had a lot of excellent toons (besides the ones you always hear on the radio). Shame Shame Shame and Slip of the Lip, ...wow! Friggin awesome songs.

I love Dokken too, but overall, I think Ratt's body of work is superior.

This. Plus, Ratt was a lot more popular as a band in the 80s, and they broke big a couple years before the others.
