I’m recording an 80s style metal album. All original songs.
I’m going for my own unique take on this tone, but I do want to nail down the basic components these guys used just to get a base line to start from.

I’ve got a DSL40CR with a Warehouse British Invasion 65w speaker. It sounds flat out amazing on it own! But I would like to know what pedals I should look for in order to send it into 100% 80s shred territory.

Guitars I’m using are Charvel 2020 San Dimas, EVH Wolfgang Special, 2020 Fender HM Strat.

Out of the Cellar era for Ratt. Tooth and Nail for Lynch’s tone. That’s what I’m chasing.

I’ve also got the EVH lbxii 5150 and matching 212, but I’d honestly rather stick with the Marshall. I believe it’s got the closer feel for what I’m going for.

Also any recording tips/advice for a beginner at home recording, message me.

Thanks!

Yeah, the parametric EQ trick will do what I think of as that Lynch type tone IMHO, but I think he's used an 808 too.

Finding PEQ pedals is annoyingly difficult. There's an old Maxon/Ibanez one, an old Boss one, and the VFE Rocket was nice. Otherwise, you're looking at something like the Empress pedal, I think (or a rackmount like the Furman).

Ultimately I always end up back with an SD-1 though.

Did you get that Super Sport? Why don't you re-upload your DeMartini clip so we can all check it out?

Parametric EQ BEFORE the amp boosting around 800 to 1000 HZ. Furman PQ3 is the go to. Randall RG amp with the PQ3 will NAIL the Tooth and Nail tone.
The TC Electronic 1140 is also great and more versatile, but the PQ3 will have the better mids and more warmth

Those PQ pedals can sound pretty good. I had the empress, but next to my Furman PQ3 or TC 1140 it was really sterile, small sounding, had ugly artifacts to its tone and just comparatively sucked imo

@311splawndude nah. I stuck with my DSL40CR. I love this amp honestly. I honestly don’t think they make a Marshall “clone” that truly delivers that “bark” in the mids like a real Marshall.

I lean more Demartini than I do Lynch in terms of tone honestly. I’m partial to that out of the cellar tone. Want to get a more modern version of that.

I really just want to find that perfect “woody” 80s tone that is perfectly saturated. I think Warren nailed it the best. That’s hands down the best tone of the LA metal scene IMO. Nuno’s tone on the first Extreme record was the second best IMO. Both were JCM800s.

What master and volume settings would you record with on my DSL40CR? I’m using sm57 and focusrite solo.

Also. I’m using Presonus studio one to record this album. I’m using a drum plugin called Perfect Drums. I can play drums, but I’m currently recovering from back surgery, so I cannot perform drums. Does anyone have experience with this stuff? I cannot figure out how to get the drum plugin to work, or how to setup my midi pad with it. I’m lost as last year’s easter egg. If you do know how to do this stuff please message me.

Nuno was NOT a JCM 800 exclusively, there was a Laney AOR in the mix as well, and again, the Furman PQ3 in front of both amps. The AOR/PQ3 combo NAILS the Nuno Extreme 1 tone.

Were the Extreme albums an ADA preamp and EMGs? Nuno recently is famous for using Marshall DSLs and a RAT pedal, I think, which is a great sound IMHO.

Three Sides was the ADA and a Soldano. To my knowledge, he never used EMGs.

No EMGs ever as far as I know. Pornogaffitti was ADA MP1 and the PQ3 again... the first record was Laney and JCM 800 2210 split to each side of the stereo spectrum (so he said at the time), I don't hear the Marshall at all.

So funny when it comes to nuno, just say the amp played was "Nuno". Because his attack and style just lend themselves to those tones. 1st album has a rattier tone so I would guess Marshall/or Pro tubes AOR with his RAT pedal. Pornografitti no questions is that ADA and it has been documented. Three sides and Waiting for the Punchline sound fatter. Pauly I think is likely right and he tends to know the hairspray years gear pretty well. But again, the amp played was "Nuno". He's just a beast. The Bill Lawrence pups do help to though. Give the bite and squealies. I have one from Bill and Becky. Great pickup but will expose your mistakes if you aren't sharp.

I'm just going to throw this out like I always do every 6 months.... if SOMEONE/ANYONE/Friedman? could replicate a PQ3 in a box, we would all be forever grateful.

Thank you.

I don't mean it as an insult, but it seems like something they might be up Fortin's alley?

Those old PQ3’s have a very warm, nice tone. I feel like it would be a very tall order to expect to make a pedal that can sound even close to as good in tone, but hopefully I’m wrong. Fortin’s pedals often sound sterile or cold and so would not be one the guys I’d trust to make a pedal capturing that sound. Just my opinion though

Maybe he was referring to Fortin's penchant for taking a design, making a tiny change, putting tribal tattoos and shit on it, calling it his own, charging a super premium, and his fanbois tripping all over their dicks to proclaim it as the second coming?

I'm putting words in his mouth here, but I assume it was a long those lines somewhere ?
