how many guys here have them or own either one, and what can you say about the quality versus the new USA deans?

i can say ive only played one USA dean in my life and it played terrible, although it was on store setup so im not sure how much it counts.

looking to get something star shaped, its come down to a dean dimebag rebel star, a washburn star, or an edwards star.

My Washburn Dime 333 plays like butter! One of the fastest and smoothest guitars I've ever picked up. Haven't played a Dean in a long time, so I can't say much about the quality. Always liked Washburns.

I'd prefer a Dean USA personally...they're doing some awesome work nowadays and every one I've played had awesome quality and played very well.

Dean USA stuff plays and feels great, and the quality is good. However, the imports are utter crap IMO. I had a Dean DFH import and the thing felt like a toy... Majorly neck heavy causing incorrect balance, crap hardware and the woods used were not good sounding either.

The Washburn Dime 333 models that i tried in the past, were a big improvement over the current Dean imports. I never got the chance to try a Dime 3 USA model but saw one in person that looked fantastic and the build quality was excellent too.

I've literally got dozens of USA Deans here... and only one Washburn... I think that says it all.

Returned your P.M.

For me Washburn WITHOUT Question.

I own 3 washburns and 2 Deans.... The current Dean Imports outside of the VMNTs I've had are shit, can not stand them, I want to like them, but just can't, the VMNTs though are nice, I have 2 of them. all of my Washburns are imports as well and are light years ahead of the deans.

I'd put Washburns USA stuff up against any US manufacturer out there, they are OUTSTANDING guitars. The Dean USAs are nice, but not as consistant, some of them are AMAZING, and others are so-so.

If I were making a comparison between Dean Imports, Washburn imports and LTDs, I'd put the high end Dean Imports on par with LTD 400 series, and Washburns abit better than the LTD 1000 series.

This is all my opinion of course, maybe I've just had bad luck with all the Deans I've owned except the VMNTs.

I haven't played a US washburn in a LONG time (maybe late 90s?) I tried a couple of the Dime ones, I thought they were pretty good honestly :rawk:

My Washburn Dime 333 plays like butter!

Is this the one where his name was misspelled as "Dimebag Darbell"??

My washburn Dime model has his name misspelled on the headstock. I remember reading about it in a magazine years before I bought it, but can't really seem to find any sort of relevant information on it.

Mine plays pretty decent. it is headstock heavy, which made me purchase a suede strap to help grip my shirt to stabilize it a bit. but its always had a somewhat darker tone and great sustain, especially when i had my emg's in there.

just curious if anyone else has more to share, ever since i read that article (which I barely remember reading) and bought this guitar i can't find much on it.

Dean is garbage unless you find one of those Korean made MLs from a few years ago. USAs can be hit and miss.

Washburn is pretty subpar too, USA Washburns in general are nice, I know the quality went down a little after Grover left in the early 2000s I think it was but otherwise pretty nice.

i have some usa dimebag washburns, a slime and a dimebolt. i also have the only quilt top southern cross washburn ever built as a prototype. i have had 3 usa southern crosses.

i have 5 custom usa dean mlf's they built to my specs, and several usa razorbacks including the last rust and one of the original 7 prototypes they rushed to get finished for namm a month after darrell died.

all of them kick-ass, but i am a bit prejudiced since i love the body style so much.

simply put.....

the deans are like art.
the washburns are like tools or weapons.

dean usa custom shop stuff is awesome because you can make insane demands, and they will try to build them for you.
usa washburns are all fairly rare, and your stuck with what was built since they won't build anything new in that body style.

usa deans will not hold their value. they are worth less than half you paid for it before the guitar is even built.
a $3000 washburn southern cross will always be worth $3000. (if you can avoid the neck joint issues set necks have).

the flame, quilt, spalted, redwood, whatever... tops that dean uses are awesome. they do nice exotic tops. in fact, you can actually provide your own top and they will put it on your guitar.
washburn flame tops are hit and miss.....mostly miss.

if you want that slime color washburn did, don't expect to get it anywhere else than on a usa washburn. trust me on this one.

the first generation usa washburn dimes (flatter volute, razorblade serial number, no buzz fienton) had real issues developing cracks in the clear coat at the neck joint. not structural, but try telling someone else that. all of darrell's are jacked (ask juggernaut). my dimebolt is too. not my slime, as it is a 3rd gen (larger volute, buzz fienton, etc).

the deans will also develop cracks in the neck joint paint if not handled with at least some care. my repair dude cracked the custom paint on one of my favorites just tightening down the floyd claw with it face down in a guitar workstation. man was i pissed. but in reality, that's the nature of a set neck on the explorer/ml body style.....there just isn't much wood above or below the neck for strength.

and leads me to actual BEST answer to your question. which is best, if you want a dimebag guitar, washburn or dean?

neither. order a custom built neck-though gutierrez built to your specs for less than a usa washburn or usa dean. i got mine in september, and have not played any of my washburns or deans since. this is no-bullshit, it's better built, and whatever that guy does to the neck has to be magic (sealer only, no nitro....carbonfiber rods down the neck, etc....). hand built to your specs, even the neck profile. stainless steel frets if you want them. floyd upgrades big block, bullet-proof EVERYTHING!!! (god, i am a whore).

i would never let any of my deans or washburns go, but damned if they are almost just cases in the way of me plugging in my gutierrez custom mlf into my amps at this point.

but if you have to chose, and can afford it, order a usa dean built to your specs and wait.....and wait.....and wait.
or buy a usa washburn dime off ebay and hope the neck joint doesn't get jacked in shipping.
