Way too many sucky "metal" bands out there............

So I'm somewhat older. My heyday was in the early to mid 90's, so anything I do these days is done in my spare time, and for fun only. If I make a few $$ here and there, neat, but I could care less about that. I took about 10 years off of trying to do the band thing on the side, but I've been doing it once again. We are an original band, but we will throw an obscure cover out here and there to fill up a set if that's what we need to do. Well, since starting to play out again, and actually trying to pay more attention to what's going on, I've realized a few things. There are WAY too many people out there that think they know how to actually play an instrument. Most of them are "metal" bands which sucks, because I LOVE to play metal, and no, not 80's hair/glam/poser metal either.

It is starting to become somewhat of an embarassment to metal/rock/music in general, the type of douchebags that actually think they are doing something worth listening to. I would much rather relive Monday night at the Satyricon in the early 90's (bands on Mondays at that club were the suck!), than to have to listen to many of the "headliners" on the weekends that are around today.

I guess I'm sounding like a jerk, and there isn't much reason to post this, however!!!!!!!! If I have to play counselor and tell one more dumb dumb that his band can't open for us, because I don't want them to clear the friggin club out, or that I won't open for them, because I don't want to be associated with barf/crap/suckage, then I think I will have to drink my own puke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At any rate, I hope everyone had a killer weekend!

Here's something that sucks about modern metal: so many people are using the same high gain gear and end up sounding exactly alike. Every idiot metal band is an EMG 81 guitar into a TS9/TS808 into a 5150/Recto into a V30 cab.

Everything and everyone sounds the same. How many great bands from the 80's used Marshall's (often the same model) and yet so many classic albums have their own sound?

When metal becomes popular, it dies a little. Sometimes more than a little.

Not an absolute truth but you do have a point.

There are some good ones, but I'm talking mainly about at the "local club scene" level.

There is some truth to that, but at least at the local pro level the dudes could actually play. I was never into butt rock, so I'm not praising all that, but holy crudely a TON of dudes now can't play at all. It's like wtf????? And yeah I liked "metal" much better when it wasn't so popular. It's almost like a lot of metal is the "new pop!"

I blame Guitar Hero.

BTW - who is that in your avatar?

How old are you? I remember when I was 21 and "into" the scene and all the bands and everything.........and there would always be that 40's something guy lurking around who was friends of a friend and he thought everything sucked and it was better when HE was young. He always had that sarcastic smile when he heard new stuff, he was never impressed by anything.........and I remember thinking it was wierd for a 40 year old to hang around 20 year old's :confused:

Hehe I'm 44, but I don't "hang out" at clubs at all. This rant came up because I have been booking us, and finding other "metal" bands to play with is friggin hard to do. I actually prefer alot of the newer style of music compared to all the 80's crap to be honest. I just wish more of the musicians at the local level could actually play and write something that is not completely hideous. So far I've insisted on us being the first band to go on, because so many of the bands out there will clear a room in about 10 minutes. I always bring a decent crowd with me, and alot of them are younger and like heavy music, but they almost never stick around much after we're done. Not because they don't like to stay out and party, but because so much of the music (writing and playing ability, not genre/style) sounds like ass..........

This ---> Gain 10

Wrong = Gain 10
Treble 10
Mid 10
Bass 10
Thats the only way to make the Line 6 it loud enough to be heard over the drums!

Ive yet to see a local metal band blow my mind. Ive seen some good shows, Ive seen bands that might have something, but largely disappointed with shit. Being elitist is definitely a fault of mine own, and partially why Ive waited so long to create a metal band after the first few that Ive been in. Certainly I was the weak component when I was younger, but playing rough rowdy punk in recent years with super professional band mates was an important lesson in how to make good music. Being creative and professional are certainly two components that musicians often flex around, and particularly so in metal. No comment on the music itself, but problem solving, unity, and subduing personal emotions to better the unit are important. I suppose these components are learned, in part, but I have heard years worth of total shit. With the strong opinions and strong dynamics of metal, alot of people are just going with best option, but not the right one. Particularly in the local scene. But I guess thats a step to learning anything, suck first, right it later. Being aware of what you suck at though is important.

Practice is really important in metal, not just on band songs, but personal technique, tightness etc. I rarely have enough time to dedicatedly practice these days and Im sure others are just as pressed.

Why? If anything, guitar hero probably opened up the ears of a generation of teenagers to a broad pallet of timeless bands & guitar players. Santana, Eric Johnson, Led Zeppelin, Tool. The list is kinda endless. I could go on.

I've often wondered whether it's really just a sign of age or whether the genre is actually getting worse. I mean, my dad would sigh when I put Iron Maiden on, singing about the devil & clairvoyants & mummies & ancient mariners & whatnot.

The genre & the music industry in general has definitely evolved to be more contrived in the way it markets bands. Some of the humility & honesty has been lost over the years perhaps.

As always of course, music is subjective & the bands I consider to be complete & utter plop plops might be someone else's inspiration.

my only beef with modern metal is the lack of interesting vocalists

Anyone can drop tune their guitar, turn the gain up to 10 and use the first 3 frets of their guitar. Just like any genre, once it becomes popular, everyone is doing it, and the vast majority of anyone (music, sports, general common sense, ect) suck.

The local scene in Central Ohio has a ton of good metal bands, more solid acts than I can ever remember. What surprises me is the amount of talented youngsters out there.

All 24 and under.^^

One of the guitar players is 19 ^^ the rest are in their early 20s'

These guys are from down the road a bit (Cincinnati) but play Columbus a lot. I 'm pretty sure none of them are old enough to buy beer. ^^^

Hate to say it since I am one of the biggest metal fans around, but Metal at the local and even the major label level in this country is and continues to decline. Not too many good metal bands aorund the US these days!! :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown:

I suggest you move to Scandinavia, Finland, or Germany for quality metal!!! :lol: :LOL: :lol: :LOL: :lol: :LOL:

I have to disagree. There are plenty of good bands in the U.S. you just have to look passed the bullshit metal-core breakdown stuff to find it.

I like the 3rd one the best, but none of the vocals tbh. LOG is about as cookie monster as I can handle from a vocal standpoint. I mean the 2nd band had super fun lyrics, but they had to post them on the video so you knew what he was saying hehe! It was still really cool and fun though. I think in y'alls neck of the woods, you've always had good heavy stuff. Probably because it's cold and everyone is pissed about it? Even here you will see some stuff like you posted, BUT you have to go through tons of SUCK to find 1 or 2 decent bands. My lonly gripe with stuff like you posted is that they tend to only play one basic speed on every track, and one style. Other than that, yeah they can play, and they are fun. I just like a little Down, Prong, and BLS type stuff thrown in there to mix it up a bit. :thumbsup:
