Hate to say it since I am one of the biggest metal fans around, but Metal at the local and even the major label level in this country is and continues to decline. Not too many good metal bands aorund the US these days!!

I suggest you move to Scandinavia, Finland, or Germany for quality metal!!!

I've been saying the same tihng for years now. Almost anything that I like comes from either Europe or Canada. The powers that be are NOT out to release the best possible music they can find, they are out to sell what's selling and make money, in the USA at least. I think bands from around the world in the past would look at the USA as the great opportunity and the big dream. Now, I'd tell them to tour Europe, Japan, Canada, South America, and skip the USA.

And I'm wearing out his album right now, IMHO it smokes the new Dream Theater.....and pretty much anything Dream Theater has done back to scenes. Of course they're from Denmark.

I'm with Blitzie on this. It's great that you can get 32 friends to come to a show once in a while, but in my experience (especially being an "older" guy still playing in metal bands) after two shows, they'll stop coming so often.

If you're looking for advice (and really it doesn't really seem that you were), you should get to know the guys in the other "inferior" bands and their fans. They're the ones that would be coming to shows and buying shirts and music. Getting a large group of 40 year olds back into metal probably isn't going to happen, especially at a club level.

Again, in my experience it's the band of "old guys'' that clear out the room way more often than poorly playing twenty year olds. Once I hit 30, the shows had to be tighter and the stage energy had to be higher to get any sort of traction with the crowd.

Just something to consider. It's advice worth almost what you've paid for it.

Interesting points. True also, but going to local metal shows, whether members are old or young, the suck level is often inappropriate for the amount of passion and talent that should be exhibited. Again, largely that is my fault for coming with a chip on my shoulder, but how many crappy originals/covers can I hear before I want to abandon the scene altogether? Best is when Ive been in the South, and the number of LoG and Pantera covers grows exponentially. And when you can guess which bands will perform them, it gets me sad. But on the other hand, I get to hear amazing new music that harkens to days of yeold and/or treads new land and I guess there is someone somewhere who is not jaded. Its definitely, an adventure

good point ...but what if your stuff isnt worth listening too either...for every good band there is 10 million that suck..way of the world relax guy..

Seriously good metal out right now, we are in a Renaissance for METAL right now!

BUT you ARE right. :)

There are way too many "sucky" metal bands out there.

Check out this awesome band I think is not Sucky.

No. That is sucky.
Yeah, it's a form of "Metal", I guess.
I prefer singing and melody instead of rapid fire noise.
But that's just my opinion. :)

There are some good ones, but I'm talking mainly about at the "local club scene" level.

How old are you? I remember when I was 21 and "into" the scene and all the bands and everything.........and there would always be that 40's something guy lurking around who was friends of a friend and he thought everything sucked and it was better when HE was young. He always had that sarcastic smile when he heard new stuff, he was never impressed by anything.........and I remember thinking it was wierd for a 40 year old to hang around 20 year old's

Just because we all get older doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't go and listen to LIVE music.
When you get older you too will want to go out and hear live music from time to time.
And not all older dudes stand around being smirky and not liking anything new.
When I was younger there were plenty of younger dudes who would stand around being smirky and critical of how a band played a certain cover, and of course if it was an original those dudes hated everything about it, cause they thought they could do better.
Maybe those are the now older dudes you're referring to. :)
To this day though there are younger dudes with a bad/negative attitude.

For me, as I get older I actually appreciate live music and originals even more, regardless of the age of the band or the musicians.
You're over generalizing too much.

Both bands are very good friends of mine. Hell, Andy from Black Crown Initiate was my teacher for quite some time. Hope this puts some of the "shitty metal band" fears you have to rest!
